Description Stéphane El Guedj 2007-11-01 23:42:45 UTC
Please describe the problem:
I'm using Fedora 7 x64. CompizFusion is installed but even when Metacity is used as Window Manager, the problem still occurs.

When I set an image as background in Nautilus, the image gets slightly corrupted if I resize the Nautilus window larger than it was when I set the background image.

Besides, and more annoying, the background image is heavily corrupted if I switch from icon to list view and back to icon view. The view is almost unreadable. I have to stop Nautilus and restart it to get back a proper background.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Set a background image in Nautilus.
2. Switch to list view => display is fine
3. Switch back to icon view => the background image is heavily corrupted

Actual results:
The background image, which is only displayed for folders in icon view, is heavily corrupted, such that the icon text gets usually unreadable.

Expected results:
The background image should remain clean.

Does this happen every time?
Yes. Whatever the background image (even standard background images available from Nautilus).

I have exactly the same problem on fc7 i386 (32bit) with nautilus 2.18.3-1 and gnome 2.18.3.

Still an issue with nautilus 2.21.90; https://bugs.launchpad.net/nautilus/+bug/191220

Comment 6 Christian Neumair 2008-04-03 12:04:09 UTC
This issue first came up in Fedora 7, and then it also affected other distros (beginning with eel 2.21). I think this has to do with the move of EelBackground to GnomeBG.

Fedora 7 had been patched:

http://cvs.fedoraproject.org/viewcvs/rpms/eel2/F-7/
eel2-2.18.0.1-gnome-bg.patch

And on 2007-11-28 this patch went upstream:

http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/eel?view=revision&revision=1994

I am moving this bug report to eel and CCing Søren Sandmann who wrote eel/GnomeBG code.

Søren: Ping?
Comment 9 Soren Sandmann Pedersen 2008-05-16 23:01:44 UTC
I can't reproduce this with svn trunk
Comment 10 Christian Neumair 2008-05-17 01:18:38 UTC
I can reproduce it reliably with Nautilus trunk and GNOME 2.22 platform libraries.
Comment 11 Soren Sandmann Pedersen 2008-05-17 05:11:18 UTC
With svn trunk of gnome-desktop?
Comment 12 Christian Neumair 2008-05-17 16:38:25 UTC
Thanks, switching to gnome-desktop trunk fixed it.

I did not expect that a huge amount of gnome-bg patch sets has been committed during the last months.

According to viewvc, the following commit might have fixed the issue [in case a distributor wants to backport the changes]:

http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/gnome-desktop?view=revision&revision=5082

Closing.

doing some testing http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/gnome-desktop?view=revision&revision=5076 seems to have fixed the issue, not a trivial change to backport to stable version though

I can still reproduce this problem with nautilus 2.28.0 in openSUSE 11.2 with Propaganda seamless tiles:

Corrected-Speed-1.jpg

Corrected-Speed-1.jpg from Propaganda vol. 8 is the background that causes this problem.

OK, reported as a new bug 604928 for GNOME 2.28.
