Description Martin Picek 2007-10-07 15:31:03 UTC
I don't use all the types of sources so some of them are very useless (for example, I have never used source Podcast and Radio). And I'm not the only one. I think that the user should have a possibility of setting the sources which will be displayed.
Comment 1 Jonathan Matthew 2007-10-08 22:44:10 UTC
The radio source can be removed by deactivating the radio plugin in gconf (it's not visible in the rhythmbox UI). The same will hold for the podcast source once it is converted into a plugin.

Is there some concern involved here besides screen real estate?
Comment 2 Martin Picek 2007-10-09 16:33:33 UTC
Yeah, you're right. I know how to hide the sources, but ho want to edit the GConf database to edit Rhythmbox's UI...? I don't think it's a good way.

> Is there some concern involved here besides screen real estate?

I'm not sure I understand. :-/
Comment 3 Jonathan Matthew 2007-10-09 22:52:08 UTC
I don't think it's important that we provide a good way to do this. Adding 'hide this source' and 'where have all my sources gone?' menu items etc. would be somewhat counterproductive - it'd clutter the UI even more.
Comment 4 Martin Picek 2007-10-10 09:21:54 UTC
I know what do you mean...

But be sure that one extra item in the menu View is NOT confusing.

The lucidity* of the UI doesn't depend on the number of the items, but only on their organization. In my opinion, this is the KDE's problem: not lot of settings, but just their organization.

* I hope, I used the right English word for the idea.

I think having a selection device for sources makes sense. It would allow to show/hide plugin sources.

For example:
Stores
[ ] Show Jamendo music store
[ ] Show Magnatune music store
Media players
  [ ] Show connected iPods
[ ] Show connected PlayForSure media players
Sources
  [ ] Show Internet Radio
  [ ] Show Podcasts
  [ ] Show FM Radio
Music Sharing
  [ ] Show Shared Music
[ ] from other compatible players
      [ ] from UPNP/DNLA devices

Then all those could be hidden from the plugins list, and activated as expected.

It's a question not only of screen real-estate (an issue for me) but also of feature bloat. Having many features which I never use makes the application more difficult to use.

Being able to disable Podcasts, as a plugin, (or even better not having it enabled by default) would be great.
