Description Bill Nottingham 2007-10-04 17:26:48 UTC
gnome-power-manager handles LCD brightness in three ways on my laptop:

- auto adjusting based on battery/AC and usage. This works.
- manual adjusting within those parameters using the applet. This also works.
- handling of the brightness keys. This fails miserably, and tends to set the brightness somewhat randomly.

g-p-m *is* seeing the key events, as it pops up its brightness display when I press the keys.

I have the same problem on my Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook S7110.
Fedora 8, hal 0.5.10, g-p-m 2.20.0

I am / was also having this issue until I found two bug reports in the Redhat bugzilla that might relate to this problem.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=363261
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=391601

I actually have a T60 and acpid does seem to break the brightness control buttons. After turning off acpid my brightness controll buttons work as expected.
Comment 3 Bill Nottingham 2008-03-28 15:39:45 UTC
As of 2.22, it no longer behaves randomly - brightness works as expected when hitting the keys, but g-p-m doesn't appear to actually notice it.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug.
However, you are using a version that is too old and not supported anymore. GNOME developers are no longer working on that version, so unfortunately there will not be any bug fixes for the version that you use.

By upgrading to a newer version of GNOME you could receive bug fixes and new functionality. You may need to upgrade your Linux distribution to obtain a newer version of GNOME.
Please feel free to reopen this bug if the problem still occurs with a newer version of GNOME.
