GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 481812
.desktop file: please shorten 'Name' and change section
Last modified: 2009-02-01 15:32:01 UTC
The .desktop file for Brasero contains this 'Name' line: "Name=Brasero Disc Burning Application" "Application" is redundant here, we are sure that in the Applications menu we will find applications. This is confusing because Brasero's entry is different from the others ("Pidgin Internet Messenger"). Please simly use "Name=Brasero Disc Burner" or "Name=Brasero Disc Burning" Also, wouldn't it be more accurate to put Brasero in the 'Accessories' section, rather than in 'Sound & Video'? Brasero is multifunctional, and when you want to burn a data CD, you don't think of music. Anyway, great "Application"! ;-)
Thanks for the bug report. request #1: the name was indeed changed to "Brasero Disc Burner" in trunk. We won't change it for stable series for translation sake but next stable series will have this new name. request #2: I don't know; that needs some thinking. Most of the other burning apps (K3b, gnomebaker, ...) if not all are already in this list.
Like Philippe said the next release the name will be called "Brasero disc Burner". But for the 2nd request i think it still fits better on the sound&video area because it's indeed a multimedia application, media-optical stuff isn't really an accessory. Thanks for the bug.
(In reply to comment #2) > But for the 2nd request i think it still fits better on the sound&video > area because it's indeed a multimedia application, media-optical > stuff isn't really an accessory. I've done several usability tests - the majority of people, who tried to write their photos, documents (or other data) or tried to duplicate CD disk firstly looked at "Accessories" submenu. More than 60% of unexperienced GNOME users didn't find Disk burning application at all - they looked at "Accessories", then at "System Tools" and "Office" menus and didn't find needed tool :( I'm suggesting to keep "Brasero disc Burner" in "sound&video" submenu and additionally add into "Accessories" submenu - then disk burning software will be easy to find and all people will be happy :) This can be easy solved by adding added Utility; to the Categories= line of brasero.desktop.in.in Should I report another bug about this or just reopen this bug?
Please reopen. =) Thanks
(In reply to comment #4) > Please reopen. =) Thanks Hehe, I can't reopen this bug - I do not have reopen permission :( Brasero developers, please reopen this bug and change the summary to match my suggestion - "add Brasero launcher into "Accessories" submenu also"
I'm sorry but i think this could be a good talk for Brasero Mailing List. The Gnome HIG and freedesktop guides doesn't allow to use 2 submenus for a single application. The bug could be something like changing Brasero current submenu to Accessories which i don't fully agree. No need to reopen please discuss on the mailing list. Thanks
(In reply to comment #6) > The Gnome HIG and freedesktop guides doesn't allow to use 2 submenus for a > single application. The bug could be something like changing Brasero current > submenu to Accessories which i don't fully agree. My idea is to leave CD/DVD burning application in "Sounds & Video" (mainly because of Audio CD burning), but for data (documents, photos, etc.) burning we need CD/DVD burning application also in "Accessories menu". Brasero has "too many" functions (when you wanna burn a data CD, you don't think of music and when you wanna burn an Audio CD, you don't think about data), because of this Brasero simply does fit in 2 submenus - "Accessories" and "Sounds & Video". I just found the best solution to this problem - we could create 2 initial interfaces for brasero: - first, optimized for creating Audio and Video CD/DVD projects; - second, optimized for creating Data (Documents, Photos, Backups) projects and copying CD/DVD disks) These 2 interfaces can look similarly to the current "Create a new Project" dialog, just buttons should be slightly different for each interface. So, first interface will be shown, when user chooses "Brasero Audio/Video CD/DVD burner" from "Sounds&Video" submenu and second interface will be shown, when user chooses "CD/DVD writer and copier" from "Accessories" submenu. I'm suggesting to have these buttons in first interface (most of them already exist in current "Create a new Project" dialog, I just slightly changed descriptions): "Standard Audio CD project" (Create a CD, containing only music; can hold maximum 90 minutes of audio) "Compressed Music or Video project" (Create a CD or DVD, containing several or more hours of Music, Video or other data) "Standard DVD/VCD video project" (Create a DVD or CD, containing only video, can be played on all DVD video players) "Disk Copy or Burn from Image" (Copy CD/DVD disk or burn an existing CD/DVD image file) Brasero currently doesn't have "Compressed Music or Video project", but this type of CD/DVD disks are used very often. In this project I'm suggesting to have an ability to add audio and video files from playlists, like in Audio CD, also suggest to user automatically compress audio files if user tries to add uncompressed (e.g. .wav) file. It seems I should report another bug about this ;) Second interface could have "Data Project", "Disk Copy", "Burn Image" and "Backup project" buttons and, additionally, could have a button, named "Audio and Video projects", which shows first interface when pressed. I can create sample glade files, if my suggestions are hard to understand, just tell me :) Btw, could you tell me links to sections of GNOME HIG and freedestop guides, where using single application in 2 submenus is forbidden? I've noticed, that "CD/DVD burner in Sounds&Video submenu" problem is discussed several times at various internet places, for example at Ubuntu Idea Brainstorm site: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/6445 > please discuss on the mailing list. Sorry, but this week I simply do not have enough free time to discuss this in mailing list. If it's ok for you I can discuss about this problem next week.
Since brasero inclusion in GNOME, things have changed; Brasero now supports all you describe above but not through desktop files but through other applications (totem for video, nautilus for data, audio with banshee and hopefully one day with rhythmbox provided the pending patch is accepted, ...); there are other applications like gthumb, f-spot, eog maybe that could benefit from an integration with brasero (I need to work on that during next developement cycle). There remain only one desktop file for brasero itself and all more advanced operations it provides. So since the plans for the future is to expose more of brasero's features through other applications (which is more or less the above proposition), I think this bug has become obsolete. Thanks for the propositions though. It indeed made sense (and still does) to "split" brasero's functionalities and expose them differently, not in a single window. I just don't think more desktop files is the solution.
