Description Sebastien Bacher 2007-09-25 12:49:00 UTC
The bug has been opened on https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/139401

"1. Choose Applications => Multimedia => Totem
2. Totem shows up with old logo theme in application's screen

Totem Mozilla plugin uses new logo theme as background when not launched (t.i. waiting for press to play), which looks much nicer and up to date. So it would be very good to use it also for standard Totem.

I am running Ubuntu Gutsy, 10th september daily. I will attach two screenshots to explain myself. First is Totem itself, using old logo. Second is Totem plugin for Mozilla, which uses new logo. I am suggesting to use new logo also in Totem itself, not only in Totem plugin for Mozilla.

This is Totem plugin for Mozilla with new logo."

If we had the new icon in high-res, I agree with Lapo it would be the most eye-pleasing thing to show. Another alternative would be not to scale the SVG to fit, but have it centered just like Quicktime does it.

Now that I brought up the reference to Quicktime -- does totem standalone actually need to have the 'video-window' open when no movie is playing?

As original submiter of bug on Launchpad, I would like to explain myself a little bit more.

First, I think Totem video-window is needed when no movie is playing and even more, it can be used for some additional UI. But that's only idea. Most of all, I am very impressed about how it is handled in Totem Mozilla plugin - new Totem icon in high def looks seriously cool and putting it in Totem would attract people to this app.

Yes, I know, it is all about coolness and stuff, but that it's one point what helps people to use software :)

By the way, I already thought about scenario when video-window is needed while video is not playing - when video has ended, or similar. Also, you can have opaque effects on high def logo.

We'd need to render the logo at a specific size. What minimum size did you have in mind? Do you know which size QuickTime uses?

Because Totem is a movie player :)

There are plenty of things we shouldn't take from QuickTime, see:

Bastien, by default my Totem opens at 612x510 (res. 1280x1024), but it could be half of that. Considering all this, logo could be 250x250 centered, and it would be more or less OK for all general default sizes, even considering 640x480 screen resolution.

Any chance of this is getting into 2.28? What would need to be done? I have always found it strange that there are two completely different logos.

Feel free to come up with a patch to remove the old logo then. See the totem_embedded_set_logo_by_name() in the browser-plugin subdir.

To see what it looks like, I replaced the old logo with the new one. It looked very "in your face" when the window was big or full-screened. I think it's because the new logo is brighter and has more contrast than the old one.

I like Peteris' suggestion of limiting it to a certain size. How about using 256x256, which is the same size as the high-resolution icon size? I think the GNOME art team wants to introduce 256 pixel application icons anyway, right? We could add the icon and load it like in totem_embedded_set_logo_by_name.

I really think the new one is crappy/fugly indeed, too much 'in your face'.

The older one is more refined and has more 'dimension' to it.
This seems like a big regression to me.
This is coming from a graphic artist, usability user.

don't want to paint the bicycle shed but I will miss the old logo. Goodbye old friend!
