GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 478423
Don't ask translators to translate iso-codes!
Last modified: 2018-05-22 12:06:34 UTC
It exists a nice project which translate languages, countries and currencies named iso-codes so .po in damned-lies musn't be ask to translate these types of strings.
I took some times to examine this question. At first, it sounds good, but: - we have to use the iso_639_3 domain - such a domain has a long way from translation to release, so many languages would be to wait for months until they can see the translated languages/countries in DL - we must stick to (sometimes long) iso_639 language names, such as "Greek, Modern (1453- )" for Greek, "English, Old (ca. 450-1100)" for Old English, "Limburgan; Limburger; Limburgish" for Limburgian, etc. Don't know if it's a very good idea...
Created attachment 96006 [details] [review] Support for external po use Here is some code diff necessary for using other system po files, in case we decide to implement this in the future.
This is a well known problem (well, especially since the author of damned-lies himself has been pushing for using iso_codes translations in most software packages in GNOME :), but as Claude described above, not trivial to solve. And also not high priority, since damned-lies is not being released (so, no set time when you need to finish up your translations), and a very live system (translation updates propagate to the system in the next few minutes). So, while I completely understand the need to avoid translation duplication, there are much more important bits to work on in Damned Lies than this. I am keeping this open, though :)
Anyone has figure out if the iso-codes project is a bit more alive now? I see three solutions here: - try to engage with iso-codes and promote its usage - realize that live is not perfect and neither is free software, but live goes on and we can survive, just like we do now, without iso-codes - create a fork of it for GNOME purposes, so that at least Damned-Lies, evolution, evince, totem, gedit and I'm sure I'm missing quite a lot more apps can stop making translators repeat its job and instead just do it once and for all apps.
Note: The domains for iso-codes are hosted at https://translationproject.org/domain/index.html.
