GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 47082
Desktop doesn't respect the "show hidden files" preference
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
Steps to reproduce: 1 - Enable "show hidden files" in preferences 2 - Create a new folder named ".blah" 3 - Drag it to the desktop and drop it near the other desktop icons It's not in the original directory anymore, but it isn't visible on the desktop. You can verify that the drag-n-drop succeeded by browsing to ~/.nautilus/desktop and seeing your dropped dot files. Ugly but not devastating. ------- Additional Comments From darin@bentspoon.com 2001-02-27 08:10:28 ---- This was an intentional choice, but perhaps not a good one. ------- Additional Comments From eli@eazel.com 2001-03-26 11:19:30 ---- SPAAAAAAAAAM! (Jon Allen has taken these components; QA Assigning bugs to him.) ------- Additional Comments From eli@eazel.com 2001-04-05 12:59:03 ---- I agree with Darin; this was not a good choice, and I'm about to file a slew of bug reports that arise from this decision. I suggest that this be given consideration for 1.0.3 if those bug reports warrant it. ------- Additional Comments From eli@eazel.com 2001-04-05 14:42:47 ---- Bugs filed: 7987, "Rename dot-file on desktop -> File name change not displayed" 7988, "Icons for dot-files on Desktop remain if files moved" ------- Additional Comments From eli@eazel.com 2001-04-05 14:48:45 ---- Err, what I meant was that we currently seem to partially support the ignoring of dot files on the desktop. We should either support it fully, or only do so for metafiles (3928). The cited bugs are just two loophopes of the current implementation that I noticed while verifying another bug. There may be many others. (Not to mention that we give no explanation of why dot-files fail to display on the desktop when attempted!) ------- Bug moved to this database by unknown@bugzilla.gnome.org 2001-09-09 21:03 ------- The original owner (engber@eazel.com) of this bug does not have an account here. Reassigning to the default owner of the component, nautilus-maint@bugzilla.gnome.org.
Marking "future" - we've lived with this a while.
This behaviour still exists in 2.1.5, and is rather confusing. The file seems to vanish into oblivion, while off course it is still there. Perhaps moving/copying dot-files to the desktop should not be allowed.
