GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 470507
if dns server (isp) goes down , gnome-apps crawl to start
Last modified: 2012-02-02 14:08:59 UTC
I had this situation many times, If my ISP's dns was down and no website was opening, all Gnome-apps will crawl before starting , It would simply take nearly 50-60 secs just to open (say gnome-terminal) why is that? My hostname does not need dns-resolution its a simple 'Fedora7' and replies to 127.0.0.1 , so what is exactly taking this time to start any app ? Other information: I know , my description of this bug just doesn't explain it properly , I am having hard time to explain on IRC #gnome too, so I made a clip when the bug works and when it does (i.e when dns is back @ ISP). Crawling Gnome with no DNS (internet) :- http://www.brightcove.com/title.jsp?title=1155180938&channel=1080168798&lineup=-1 I am blogging about it ,till this is resolved. > http://linuxtruthiness.blogspot.com/2007/08/day1-gnome-apps-delay-start-with-no.html Fast working gnome with proper dns > http://www.brightcove.com/title.jsp?title=1155083762&channel=1080168798&lineup=-1
Solved! Solution:- Fedora/gnome does not update hostname changes made by hostname command, I had to add it in /etc/hosts everything i change hostname. needs to be fixed IMHO. Thanks.

Is this still an issue in 3.2 or 3.0?
Closing as OBSOLETE as this seems to be a problem lower in the stack of some distribution and as there was no response.
