Description Bastien Nocera 2007-08-17 13:41:15 UTC
As per:
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gnome.gdm.general/831/focus=839

Keyboard shortcuts should be more visible/present if there's no mouse available, so the user doesn't get all confused about not knowing the shortcuts.

Could you propose how GDM should show the keyboard shortcuts, and which shortcuts need attention? Do you refer to gdmlogin or gdmgreeter?
Comment 2 Brian Cameron 2007-08-20 22:01:15 UTC
Note that when you hit F10 in gdmgreeter to see the menu, it does show mnemonics.

Mainly the greeter, as it's probably the likeliest one to be used on desktop machines where a mouse wouldn't be present.

As for the "shortcuts", it's mainly "language", "session", etc. that would need a little help. I doubt users know that "Alt+underlined character" will bring them the dialogues in question. With a mouse, it's easy to click those, without it, you'd really need an "Alt+S" next/under "Session".

I notice when I run gedit, and look at the menus it says the following for various menu items:

File->_New  Ctrl+N

Are you suggesting GDM should also show its menu items like this?

Comment 5 Bastien Nocera 2007-08-20 22:46:54 UTC
Within the possibilies of the greeter, yes. But I assumed most of that work would be targetted for the new greeter/gdm Jon is working on, rather than the current version.
Comment 6 Brian Cameron 2007-08-21 02:12:38 UTC
I don't think I was suggesting that this be fixed in any particular version, just trying to clarify how the menus should look.

To be honest, I'm not sure what we're going to do with the greeters in the D-Bus enabled release of GDM. Jon has worked on a "simple-greeter" but it currently lacks most of the functionality that people want from the greeter. For example, it does not yet support language or sessions switching, nor does it have any menus. Whether we enhance this prototype greeter to meet all our needs or whether we port the existing gdmlogin/gdmgreeter to use the new D-Bus interfaces is up in the air, and probably mostly going to be determined where people on the GDM team want to invest their time.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug.
However, you are using a version that is too old and not supported anymore. GNOME developers are no longer working on that version, so unfortunately there will not be any bug fixes for the version that you use.

By upgrading to a newer version of GNOME you could receive bug fixes and new functionality. You may need to upgrade your Linux distribution to obtain a newer version of GNOME.
Please feel free to reopen this bug if the problem still occurs with a newer version of GNOME.
