GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 461935
Theme: The home needs to fit in 800px width
Last modified: 2012-03-02 16:00:42 UTC
As agreed in the web policies, the revamped wgo needs to fit in 800x600 resolution. Currently the home doesn't fit, being the main (only?) problem the width of the splash image. We need to come up with the appropriate size of the splash image and also of the banner in the right column. Changing the current banners with fake images with the right size is enough to close this bug. Then we will put Andreas and the marketing team machinery to work to provide the final splash and banner.
Ricky, can you take this one as well?
I definitely agree. Since the sidebar is 25% wide at the moment, the splash image should be <=600px, and the banner images should be <=200px. I suspect that the tabs sizes might pose a (rather annoying) problem for 800x600 displays as well.
If we make the banner 550px and the sidebar 188px (minwidth?), we still have 132 px left for margins and paddings. We actually used to make the banners 550px for a while, but then we removed the thing at the right and went all crazy with the width of the banner. I would be more than happy to go back to 550.
Created attachment 92795 [details] example banner this is a 550px banner. Should work on the n800 as well.
Good, thanks! Andreas, do you want to try inserting the splash yourself, following the instructions at http://live.gnome.org/GnomeWeb/ContributorsHowTo ? Do you have editor permissions already? In any case this bug seems to be mostly solved. Let's just wait to see the implementation. We need another banner with the right width for the column, you could try to add it yourself too.
I've inserted the splash and adjusted the sidebar to be 20% wide/hopefully display properly in 800x600. The tab sizes (and the sidebar images, once I test them), may still be a problem.
Created attachment 92811 [details] 800pxx screenshot not yet, see screenshot from a tablet.
Sorry, I haven't been able to actually push the changes to the test site yet- there's apparently a delay before proper permissions are set on the SVN directory, making anonymous updates not work. I'll look into getting around this with a dedicated user or something.
Ricky, is this fixed now? Do you need help from someone?
We need to test if this problem further exists or is easy to fix. Otherwise the rule may be relaxed to "1024x768" or "1024x768 if the site is still usable in 800x600.". The WebsitePolicy is two years old now.
800x600 is probably still interesting to us for handheld devices.
Isn't everyone using 1024x768 today ? Isn't it important for the website to have enough white space for most users, rather than being optimized for handheld devices ?
Maybe that would be an easier choice if we had some rough example to show the advantage of demanding more space. However, I don't think this is a high priority. Just getting the rough style and structure (and existing) content up is far more important.
Can we do this fast as it is one of the blockers in bugzilla. I replaced the sample banner with the example banner attached to this ticket, which is smaller. The only thing that blocks the browser resizing to 800px is div.rss-columns on the mainpage, where a fixed width of 724px is set. Sébastien, I assign the ticket to you cause you wrote mainpage. Feel free to return it.
Ok, I'll fix it this evening (or tomorrow).
Tried... and failed. Looks like I'm definitely not a CSS guru. Maybe someone more skilled (speedbreeze ?) can fix this ?
The website is now using a 960 grid layout and should fit well on most screens and devices. It works pretty well on my Android phone for example. Is it ok if I close this bug?
As no objections in 6 months, closing as fixed. Feel free to repopen if it pops up again
