Description Philip Van Hoof 2007-07-10 09:40:10 UTC
It would be interesting to have some Subversion integration with softwares like trac.
Comment 1 Murray Cumming 2007-07-10 09:42:52 UTC
Philip, could provide some quick examples? What functionality would this offer? Is this just a matter of installing something? Is this done elsewhere that we can look at?
Comment 2 Philip Van Hoof 2007-07-10 09:50:13 UTC
I don't think it's just an install. The default install of trac leaves a lot of paths open to spammers. It probably needs some maintaining too.

There are a lot of developers who enjoy trac. Examples that come in mind are Diva, Gobby (I think, not sure if Armin is still using trac), Tinymail (that's me, of course), ...

If offers a variety of features. The most used are the side-by-side diff viewer, the source code browser. Also the possibility to make easy wiki-like links to Subversion revisions is something I enjoy using.

These are things that can be hacked in bugzilla too, of course.

I fear modern days require multiple possibilities and options to achieve the same thing. One developer is not the other developer. One developer prefers trac, the other prefers good 'ol ViewCVS (with the Subversion patch), vi and Bugzilla. Another one prefers total and full integration with Visual Studio .NET which he runs in Windows XP on a VMWare player and ... and .. Eclipse with, I don't know.

So you are asking for a trac installation on gnome.org?

You can already browse viewsvn (though there's no side-by-side diff viewer) and you can link to viewsvn from bugzilla using a regular URL. Could you show an example of how trac's "wiki-like links" are easier?

Personally, I would like to avoid using multiple bug-tracking systems for GNOME. We should have one that's good enough. Of course, bugzilla's good enough for me personally.

I do not see the benefit of having multiple issue trackers. We have Bugzilla and it is already hard enough to find maintainers for that.
