Description Rebecca Schulman 2001-09-10 00:48:28 UTC
It seems really poor to keep two completely unrelated repositories of text
that describe a search. We currently keep one for the names in the option menus
and another for the text to describe a search. Since our goal is to make
the search menus be sentence-like, the sentence description should
hypothetically be able to be drawn from the option menu text. It's not
maintainable to keep it this way, and it also exposes the fact that both are
fairly poorly worded.
This task should involve creating coherent wording and collecting it into
use in both situations. The coherent wording task, of course is a ui one,
and the other part of this task (which could potentially be filed as a second
bug if someone prefers this) is to implement these suggestions.

This task came to light after talking to Christian Rose, who has been helping to
make the search text translatable. He pointed out that the current text is
fairly unclear, and that it would be potentially clearer with his proposed
design. Slso his question about what the "human readable" search text was
exposed the fact our very need for a "human readable" description for a search
indicates that perhaps the search menu text isn't all that readable.

I think that this bug is really tangled up with the other bugs mentioned (bug
45088 and bug 45314). This bug "in its own right" is not necessarily required for
1.0, but this gives us a chance to keep the overall design nice as we address
those separate problems if we tackle the problem the way it's described in this
bug report.

Didn't this get fixed? If not, reassign back to me and we'll talk about it.

Changing to "old" target milestone for all bugs laying around with no milestone set.
Comment 2 Christian Fredrik Kalager Schaller 2002-05-11 16:04:47 UTC
Closing this bug as search is no longer part of Nautilus. If search
comes back it will probably be with new/heavily modified codebase.

Sorry for the SPAM. Re-opening the search bugs and assigning them to
Rebecka's old eazel account.
