Description grendel2110 2007-06-22 20:03:52 UTC
I'm trying to ./configure an install file (for thoggen), but I keep coming back to this error:

Please check the following:

     * Do you have the GStreamer _development_ package installed?
       (usually called gstreamer-devel, libgstreamer0.10-dev or similar)
       If
           ls -l /usr/lib/pkgconfig/gstreamer-0.10.pc
       reports that the file does not exist, then you are missing
       the development package. If you installed GStreamer from
       source, this point does not apply to you.

     * Do you have GStreamer installed more than once, e.g. once
       from package and once from source? (if both
           ls /usr/lib/libgstreamer-0.10*
       and
           ls /usr/local/lib/libgstreamer-0.10*
       show results, you need to fix your installation.

     * Did you install GStreamer from source? If yes, you might need to
       point pkg-config to the location of the gstreamer-0.10.pc file by
       doing something like
          export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig
       and then running ./configure again.

I've knowingly installed gstreamer 0.10, and when I run 'ls -l /usr/lib/pkgconfig/gstreamer-0.10.pc,' I get '-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 412 2006-05-17 10:50 /usr/lib/pkgconfig/gstreamer-0.10.pc'

I'm not that great with source code, so some dumbed down help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

 - How did you install GStreamer (from source? from package?)

 - what does 'which pkg-config' return on a command line?
Comment 2 grendel2110 2007-06-22 22:03:29 UTC
I installed it from a package using Synaptic. The 'which pkg-config' command returns /usr/bin/pkg-config. Don't know this command so I'm not sure what the result means. Thanks for being patient, this is just confusing me greatly.
Comment 3 Tim-Philipp Müller 2007-06-22 23:46:24 UTC
Thanks! Some more info we might need then:

 - could you attach the config.log file from the thoggen top-level directory?

 - could you also copy'n'paste the output of 'printenv' on a command line
   please (typed right after configure fails)?

 - what version of Thoggen are you trying to compile?

It's running gstreamer 0.8 because it's an out of date version...which is why I'm trying to upgrade in the first place.

-As you can see from the top line above I'm trying to compile thoggen-0.6.0 (upgrading from 0.4). Thanks again.

It would be great if you could also attach the config.log file that was produced after ./configure failed. Could you also paste the ~10 lines before it says 'Please check the following'?

Out of curiosity, what distro/version are you trying this on? Even debian stable has Thoggen 0.6.x ...

Sorry for the delay, I've been out of touch (and off the computer) for a while.

I'm currenty running Ubuntu 6.06 LTS, which I'm sure is somewhat out of date. Anyway, when I run the ./configure command, these are the last bunch of lines before the 'Please check the following..." section.

checking for libglade-2.0 >= 2.4.0... yes
checking GLADE_CFLAGS... -I/usr/include/libglade-2.0 -I/usr/include/gtk-2.0 -I/usr/include/libxml2 -I/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/include -I/usr/include/atk-1.0 -I/usr/include/cairo -I/usr/include/pango-1.0 -I/usr/include/glib-2.0 -I/usr/lib/glib-2.0/include

checking for gstreamer-0.10 >= 0.10.10... configure: error:
    Cannot find gstreamer-0.10 >= 0.10.10

I'm not too sure how to find the config.log file for the terminal; the system log viewer is somewhat vague. Thanks for the continuing help, hope I can resolve this issue.

Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (= Ubuntu Dapper) ships with gstreamer 0.10.6 according to http://packages.ubuntu.com/libgstreamer0.10-0 , so for the configure check to work you'll need to upgrade to a newer version of ubuntu. Dapper is simply too old for the version of thoggen you're trying to compile, sorry.
