Unfortunately, that stack trace is missing some elements that will help a lot
to solve the problem, so it will be hard for the developers to fix that crash.
Can you get us a stack trace with debugging symbols? Please see
http://live.gnome.org/GettingTraces for more information on how to do so and
reopen this bug or report a new one. Thanks in advance!

Please help fixing this by installing some debugging packages [1], start the application as normal, and try to reproduce the crash, if possible?

Once bug-buddy pops up, you can find the stacktrace in the 'Details', now containing way more information. Please copy that stacktrace and paste it as a comment here. Thanks in advance!

[1] Please install the following debug packages provided by Fedora: gnome-panel-debuginfo, glib2-debuginfo, and gtk2-debuginfo.

Please help fixing this by installing some debugging packages [1], start the
application as normal, and try to reproduce the crash, if possible?

Once bug-buddy pops up, you can find the stacktrace in the 'Details', now
containing way more information. Please copy that stacktrace and paste it as a
comment here. Thanks in advance!

It seems most reports mention that this happens on login, when the panel starts. I'm not quite sure if there's anything else to do.

A simple way to restart the panel without having to log out of GNOME is this:

 gnome-session-remove gnome-panel && gnome-panel &

However, this might not be enough to reproduce the bug: maybe it's related to another event happening on login.

If you succeed in reproducing this, this would be really helpful!

Comment 137 n-rooter 2007-07-04 23:50:57 UTC
Please teach me method to get information when the issue was duplicated.

I don't know method to get data of trace or debug.
Comment 138 André Klapper 2007-07-04 23:58:24 UTC
n-rooter: please see comment 131, and if something is unclear just ask.
we would be happy to fix this, but need some help and more information. :-)
Comment 139 n-rooter 2007-07-05 03:41:53 UTC
I changed settings of im-chooser.
"Follow the system-wide configuration[SCIM]" -> "Use custom input method"

Then, I clicks Logout buttom.
But, when i was login, the issue was not duplicated.
I had occured the issue.(Bug 452432)

Question:
When i occured the issue(But 452432), i can selecte "Use legacy input method".
But, now the settings can't selecte.

Why "Use legacy input method" can not select?
Comment 140 n-rooter 2007-07-05 03:53:28 UTC
I tried to duplicate the issue.
So, the issue was duplicated.(Bug 453856)

TEST scenario:
1. Changed setting of im-chooser.
"Follow the system-wide configuration[SCIM]" -> "Use custom input method"

2. Click "Close" buttom.

3. Click "Log Out <User_name>" on System panel.

4. Login system.

-> The issue was duplicate.
Comment 141 André Klapper 2007-07-05 10:16:23 UTC
n-rooter:
Thanks for reproducing this, however, the stacktrace is the same as before and not helpful enough.
Can you please install some Fedora 7 debugging packages (gnome-panel-debuginfo, glib2-debuginfo, and gtk2-debuginfo) and try to reproduce the crash, if possible?
More details about installing Fedora 7 debugging packages can be found here: http://live.gnome.org/GettingTraces/DistroSpecificInstructions#head-21e6ec5741104ba711176076e679192686153acf

When the crash happens and bug-buddy pops up, please do not file a new report but instead, click on the 'Details' button. Copy that stacktrace and paste it as a comment here. Thanks a lot in advance!!

Unfortunately, it seems you still don't have debuginfo packages installed :/
Comment 152 André Klapper 2007-07-05 13:59:08 UTC
n-rooter:
to me it looks like you run stable GNOME 2.18.2 on Fedora 7, but the debuginfo packages that you have listed are for unstable GNOME 2.19.x on Fedora 8beta:
gnome-panel-debuginfo.x86_64 2.19.4-1.fc8
glib2-debuginfo.x86_64 2.13.6-1.fc8
gtk2-debuginfo.x86_64 2.11.5-1.fc8

which versions of gnome-panel, glib2 and gtk2 are installed on your system?

if you have the stable versions installed, you most probably need gnome-panel-debuginfo-2.18.0-9.fc7, glib2-debuginfo-2.12.11-1.fc7 and gtk2-debuginfo-2.10.11-7.fc7 which are for example available at
ftp://ftp.tu-chemnitz.de/pub/linux/fedora/linux/releases/7/Everything/x86_64/debug/

Comment 154 mybudbuddyreport 2007-07-05 18:03:29 UTC
I did install* «gnome-panel-debuginfo-2.18.0-9.fc7», «glib2-debuginfo-2.12.11-1.fc7» and «gtk2-debuginfo-2.10.11-7.fc7». But I couldn't replicate this error. Another issue: disappering of the frames of any application windows. I "solved" that by deleting $HOME/.gnome2/session & user's re-login.

*yum's cleaning says now:
[root@localhost ~]# yum clean all
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Cleaning up Everything
Error: Error accessing directory //var/cache/yum/fedora-debuginfo/headers, [Errno 2] Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden: '//var/cache/yum/fedora-debuginfo/headers'

pretty good trace, thanks a lot!
Comment 158 Vincent Untz 2007-07-06 23:02:50 UTC
Ouch. We'll need a valgrind log because this seems to be memory corruption :/

You can run gnome-panel under valgrind by doing this:
gnome-session-remove gnome-panel && G_SLICE=always-malloc G_DEBUG=gc-friendly valgrind --tool=memcheck --leak-check=full --leak-resolution=high --num-callers=20 gnome-panel

The output of valgrind is what you should attach here.

Unfortunately, this might be hard to debug if you can only reproduce the crash on login.

Also, I'd need to know the following information:
 + can you easily reproduce the crash by doing "gnome-session-remove gnome-panel && gnome-panel &"?
+ can you easily reproduce the crash by changing theme (especially changing the theme engine between Raleigh and the one you're currently usig)?
+ what is the theme you're using?
+ what is your panel configuration (do you have a vertical panel, eg)?

Hrm, you can forget about "--leak-check=full --leak-resolution=high" since we're not looking for leaks. This will just make things slower, without being really useful for us.

This could be bug 426987. Matthias will release 2.10.14 within the next month, I guess.
Comment 164 Vincent Untz 2007-07-08 11:35:57 UTC
If somebody knows how to create a package from svn, I'd love to have a snapshot of this branch as a fedora rpm: http://svn.gnome.org/svn/gtk+/branches/gtk-2-10/

So people can test if the fix for bug 426987 fixes this bug.
Comment 165 Ray Strode [halfline] 2007-07-08 13:16:30 UTC
I've built Fedora 7 RPMS with the patch from bug 426987 here:

http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=10644

I'll push the packages to -updates-testing shortly, too.
Note, the patch already appears to be in rawhide.

Got a first report from someone telling me that the new rpm seems to fix the issue. We'll wait a few more days to be sure.

Unfortunately, it seems the crash still happens with the rpm (at least for one people - bug 455048), even if it happens less often :/

614 rejected bug reports in auto-reject so far, but "2.18.x" is set as version in the auto-rejecter. we have not seen any 2.20 or 2.21 reports so far (well, if bug 503250 is not a duplicate, because that one is from 2.20).

=> can anybody reproduce this crash with GNOME 2.20?
