GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 439947
Please include gnome-mastermind
Last modified: 2007-05-31 06:55:57 UTC
Gnome-Mastermind is a great small game that would suit gnome-games perfectly. Could it be considered for inclusion in gnome-games 2.20? http://www5.autistici.org/gnome-mastermind/ Thanks.
Hi, It looks pretty good, and has almost the same "style" as the other games in gnome-games. However, I don't think it's a good idea to accept new games into gnome-games at this time. We have already accepted two new games during the previous development cycle, and is still working on integrating and fixing bugs in those new games. If a new game could be considered, then I think that we should have a proper process of choosing the new game from several alternatives. Perhaps gnome-games-extra-data could be a good place to add new games? We could extend the purpose of that package from simply containing more themes and data, to also include extra games. For example, add gnome-mastermind, gataxx and gnome-stones to that package. If this sounds interesting, then I suggest you send a query to the games-list@gnome.org mailing list and ask what people think... :)
"However, I don't think it's a good idea to accept new games into gnome-games at this time. We have already accepted two new games during the previous development cycle" Well, I knew you had accepted some games during the last cycle and that's what made me think you guys'd be open to accepting some new ones this cycle too. I hope it can be considered for inclusion when the time is right to take some more games in. That gnome-games-extra sounds interesting... could it maybe be used as a testground for new games eligible for inclusion in gnome-games? If games are included in gnome-games-extra and don't get many bugs, in time they could be added to gnome-games. What do you think about it?
I agree with the gnome-games-extra idea. (I was having this discussion with my flatmate a few months ago and we were discussing the difference between the Gnome games and KDE games). Being more open to new games may attract new developers which is good. We just need to make sure the 2nd (and possibly third) tier games are carefully marked that "bugs may not be fixed (immediately)" so users don't get a bad impression. Having multiple tiers means we can provide by default a small set of well polished and integrated games (which keeps the distributors happy) for the default desktop but also provide/promote more games that fit into the Gnome style. New games/developers can use the -extra package as a sandbox to do heavy development before considering moving to the main package. My vote: Yes
I should be more specific: Yes for inclusion into an -extra package and potentially then into 2.22
New version (0.3) just released :) Checkout more at project homepage http://www5.autistici.org/gnome-mastermind Thanks!
