Description John Pye 2007-05-20 13:19:18 UTC
Each time a file is to be exported, the filename for export comes up as xxxxx.dia.

If last time I exported an .eps file, it would be nice if .eps came up as the extension again the next time.
Comment 1 Lars Clausen 2007-05-20 17:12:21 UTC
It does remember it for me. Can you give me the exact sequence you do where it does not remember?
Comment 2 John Pye 2007-05-20 23:48:02 UTC
1. Start Dia.
2. In the diagram window (not the tool panel window) press alt-F-O
3. Select a .dia file
4. Press ctrl-E (zoom)
5. Press alt-F-E (export)
6. Filename shows up as xxxxx.dia. Edit end to '.eps'
7. alt-S (save)
8. repeat from step 5 again. '.eps' has not been remembered.

if you select to export eps the filename is adapted appropriately, remembering the export file name for "By extension" would be a small additional feature

"By extension" is such a powerful feature, that users find it easier than searching for the appropriate option. Remembering the previously typed extension will immensely increase its utility. There is another feature worth adding here ... the "Export" entry should show a submenu with the last 3-5 extensions used, similar to using a DiaDynamicMenu. This will save the hassle of being confronted with a dialog box when all you want to do is click "OK".

The problem with "by extension" is that there are multiple file formats that use the same extension, and if I want to use "antialiased PNG" instead of "cairo png" there is no way to express that preference in Dia.
The current "by extension" has a serious flaw in that it keeps picking the same WRONG cairo png file format each time I export a diagram.

Interesting statement, but not any longer true since Dia 0.97 (released about
two years ago). See:
http://dia-installer.de/doc/en/usage-customization.html#preferences-favorites
Comment 7 alan ezust 2011-07-26 15:50:45 UTC
Ah, thanks! Didn't notice it as I was skimming through preferences. Perhaps if the "Favorites" was renamed to "Saving" I would have noticed it.
So it seems *this* ticket is resolved. It remembers the save format now.

In any case, don't you think the prettiest export format should be the system wide favorite on new installs of dia? In particular, the cairo png always looks bad compared to the antialiased png, so having the cairo png as the default will lead to ugly exports by mistake.
