Description Mike McWay 2007-04-21 17:14:22 UTC
Please describe the problem:
When sorting by album or track the list only sorts by artist

Steps to reproduce:
1. basic sorting by column (album or track)

Actual results:
sorts by artist

Expected results:
sort by selected album (also in track order) or track

Does this happen every time?
yes

Comment 1 Peter Giles 2007-05-07 15:25:13 UTC
This is certainly happening for me. I am playing music off my iPod, and sorting by album or track produces strange and useless results (it doesn't seem to sort by artist for me). This really hampers basic functionality for people like me who like to listen to albums in track order from time to time. :(

Video of incorrect "sort by album" behavior

Here's a video (zipped) of the sorting not applying correctly. In this case, it doesn't even seem to be sorting by artist.

Adding Don, the author of the video I just attached. (Don, if you could comment on whether the behavior here matches what you're experiencing?)
Comment 4 Don Edgar 2007-06-05 01:03:47 UTC
Well, I guess since I made the video, I would have to say it does match my experiences. It seems to almost be sub-sorting by author or file. But the out of places ones are often grouped together in a fashion that leads me to believe they're logically grouped in a very unwanted way.

I've had this problem in both Ubuntu Feisty and Fedora 7. How is something like this not even confirmed at this point?

Well, not everyone is experiencing it (including me), and only certain people (developers? cool people?) can update the status of the bug.
Comment 9 David L. Day 2007-10-24 10:20:46 UTC
I am using Ubuntu Gutsy, Banshee 0.13.1 and Firefly 2.4-r1376 (mt-daap). Sorting by Track Number appears to work okay for local files, but not for anything over DAAP.

So - maybe some are seeing the problem and some are not depending on whether or not they are looking at local files. Can someone try this using iTunes as the source, or verify this happens with something other than Firefly? I tried verifying this using Rhythmbox 0.10.0 as the source, but Banshee could not successfully log in to that share.

Check out comment #2 where I posted a video of someone (not I) who's experiencing this problem. In that case he's using the Library, so the files are local.

I noticed this some time ago (in fact I think I filed a duplicate bug for this). What is actually happening is that Banshee is correctly sorting a *different* column than the one you selected. For example, right now I have Banshee 0.13.1 (debian) installed and when I try to sort by track number the tracks are actually sorted by artist.

This particular case is the one I'm noticing too. Is anyone noticing different unexpected behavior?

Comment from downstream:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/banshee/+bug/144173

"The same thing happened to me and it seems that filling the 'track count' metadata with the correct value corrected the problem (at least it did here)."

It's just a workaround, but can anyone else see if this helps their sorting?
Comment 16 Adam Caldwell 2008-05-22 01:58:39 UTC
This problem still occurs in 0.99.1. It seems if the tracks aren't by the same artist, sorting by track number actually sorts by artist. See attached screenshot demonstrating problem: this is an album that is tagged correctly, but will not sort by track using the track column (though oddly enough sorts fine if I sort by album).

That's expected behavior. When sorting by track, it first sorts (as I recall) by artist and then by album. It's not completely obvious, but it's generally the right thing, I'd wager.

I'm tempted to close this NOTABUG regarding the case where sorting by track sorts by Artist first, but there are a few other anomalies here (comment #2) and I'm not sure comment #0 is the same case or not. Can anyone comment on whether they're seeing anything other than the track/artist sort in 1.0? If so, can you see if the workaround in comment #15 helps?
