Description Sebastien Bacher 2007-03-19 17:58:31 UTC
The bug has been opened on https://launchpad.net/bugs/92935

"Binary package hint: evolution

I have subscribed to 3 different iCal (Zimbra) calendars. I have them checked (enabled) and have told Evolution to display alarm notifications 15 minutes before an event. The events appear both in Evolution and under "appointments" when I click on the date/time applet in Gnome. However, I never receive any notifications.

I don't know if this is relevant or not, but the only mail account I have configured in Evolution is a "none" account (no IMAP, POP, etc connection) since I don't use Evolution for email.

Bugs 40005 and 58540 appear to be similar.

I'm using Edgy, updated daily.

> Thank you for your bug. Did you select those calendars to the preferences dialog alarm option? Do you have evolution open or not?
...
Hello, thanks for the response.

Yes, I have checked the web calendars for notification. In fact, they are the only ones checked for notification.

Evolution is typically closed - though the evolution-alarm-notify process is still running - but I'm experiencing the same issue with Evolution open."

comment on the distribution bug:

"While browsing through my gconf settings I noticed that /apps/evolution/calendar/notify/calendars is blank ([]) even though I have the calendars checked in Evolution, last_notification_time is -1, and programs is blank ([])."

I'm having the same problem, but using an Exchange account and calendar. I'm running Evolution 2.10.x on Ubuntu Feisty, fully updated as of today.

In my case, the problem is better described here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution-exchange/+bug/98625

In short, after unchecking and re-checking my calendars in Edit->Preferences->Calendar and Tasks->Alarms, alarms start working again for that session. However, this workaround doesn't persist.

I can confirm this bug. I use google calendar iCal source, and no matter what anything from the iCal source doesn't give a notification. Normal events that I enter by hand into evolution work, however. The notification daemon is running, and I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 with evolution 2.22.3.1-0ubuntu1.

Any word on a fix yet? I've got my google calendar world almost complete, and I'm almost ready to switch from thunderbird, all I need is this one little bug to not happen any more :(

Mostly in order to get on the CC list, I can confirm this bug in Ubuntu 9.04 and Evolution 2.26.1.

In Prefs > Calendars > Alarms, all calendars are selected for alarm notification. In Prefs > Calendars > General I have "Show a reminder 15 minutes before every appointment".

Appointments added to a local calendar ("On This Computer") generate the 15 minute alarm as expected.

Events on a calendar synced from google (either using the "Google" or "On The Web" method) do not generate alarms. I would even be happy if I could manually set a local alarm on a synced event, but of course the "Alarms" button on the event info popup is disabled.

As dmsuperman points out, it's soo close! If I just had a calendar where I could (a) check my schedule when I am away from my main computer, and (b) get reminders for upcoming events when I am at my main computer, it would be revolutionary!

With respect of exchange, there had been done some fixes in, I do not know exactly, maybe last 6 months or less. As long as you store password for your exchange calendar with evolution you should receive alarm notifications for events which have an alarm set.

But, the option in named quite misleading. It just sets the default alarm, which is added to every new event user is creating, it doesn't influence an alarm notification process. The option should be rather named "Add a reminder X minutes before, for every new appointment"

I'm closing this, there is not much to do from my point of view. The option might need rename, but otherwise the On The Web calendars can server reminders, which I successfully use for the last year, dating from 3.12.0. The only thing is that the reminder is shown only if the event in the calendar has it set.
