Description Milan Bouchet-Valat 2007-02-11 11:47:53 UTC
"Computer" place is an idea coming from windows, and I think it's really bad named. Indeed, "computer" is everything on your desktop; or at least it can point to close to hardware and administration tasks.
In GNOME, this place only shows the filesystems and disks available. So the name is definitely not well-chosen.
I'm not against getting ideas from Windows when they look really good. But here GNOME is copying the bad things of Windows, and making them even less useful. In GNOME we have a Control center to manage admin tasks, and it's great: "Computer" is thus used only for drives.

I suggest we simply call it "Disks" or "Drives": this will be much more logical and consistent, since it's the only thing you can see there. Let's show our difference with Windows when we have good (and clearer) features.

We're using nautilus-computer.desktop, so this would be a nautilus bug.

bug 311438 may be relevant here.

This is essentially gone now.
