Gyrus is really lacking an icon. It's pretty ugly to see the default application icon on it. This should be fixed before 0.4.

proposed icon by Jakub Szypulka

Jakub Szypulka, one of the tango artists, has stepped in and proposed an icon for gyrus. I'm pasting here his comments on the icon he created.

First of all, thanks a lot for your work! The icon looks pretty nice and remembers me of both gyros and kebab food, that I ate a lot when I lived in Germany :-)

Now, to the topic. Unfortunately, I'm not 100% sure that it's ok to use such a metaphor for icons in the GNOME Desktop. I remember some discussions, a while ago, that using metaphors that could help remember how the program is named instead of what it does could bring problem in different contexts.

A live example is the icon of an old application that was a viewer for the system log, whose icon was that: a log. Unfortunately, for non english speakers the metaphor was not clear (p.g., spanish of log is "tronco", which is not at all related to a system log).

I'm afraid that your icon could suffer the same problem. Although I'm sure the metaphor would do in Europe and I guess in Asia, as well, I know for sure that kebab and gyros food is not a popular food in Latin America, and it's something really new here.

Yeah, sorry Jakub, but even though the icon looks nice, it's just too weird.
Perhaps we can brainstorm a bit on IRC sometime this week and come up with something better.

How about having a tango version of the cyrus logo? (cf http://cyrusimap.web.cmu.edu/)
Comment 4 Claudio Saavedra 2008-08-01 16:27:14 UTC
Hm, since I can't see a good metaphor for it and I suppose that for cyrus users the cyrus logo must be easily recognizable, it "could be" a good idea.

I would try first to be sure that we aren't stepping on a branded logo and stuff like that.

gyrus is not under active development anymore and had its last code changes
in 2013. Its codebase has been archived:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/Archive/gyrus/commits/master

Closing this report as WONTFIX as part of Bugzilla Housekeeping to reflect
reality. Please feel free to reopen this ticket (or rather transfer the project
to GNOME Gitlab, as GNOME Bugzilla is deprecated) if anyone takes the
responsibility for active development again.
