GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 402120
Strange '%s' in popup/dialog
Last modified: 2008-04-26 17:45:39 UTC
With Dia 0.96pre/Windows, Swedish locale, I have a suspicious '%s' in a "popup/dialog". It is the poput you get when clicking to select a different sheet of shapes. Here's the text in the popu Blandat UML ------- Diverse ------- %s Användarbland Använd menyrad I don't know how to make Dia use English (but I'd like to if I could!), so I'm note sure what it would say in the English version. Here's my *guess* Misc UML ------- Etc ------- %s User sheets Use menu line Anyway, the strange thing is the '%s' that shows up before the text "Användarbland". I'm guessing it's a formatting instruction that's not interpreted correctly.
This is clearly a bug in the translation file (see http://svn.gnome.org/viewcvs/dia/trunk/po/sv.po?view=markup search for Användarbla) fuzzy means automatic translation. I'd liek to get a patch to update the translation issues. There is a lot of fuzziness which should be simple to fix for a native speaker. BTW: you can remove the translation by either removing /usr/share/locale/LC../dia.mo or set the environment variable LANG to empy or another locale before starting dia
Eh... are you sure this works in Windows?
Yes, deleting the file containing the translation will have the same effect on windoze as on linux. (The translation will be not available anymore) On windoze the file is stored application relative, e.g. ../locale/(lang)/LC_MESSAGES/dia.mo Also setting the environment variable works: set LANG=en_US. Deleting does not, cause it does not need to be there. Than the system languafe gets used.
I tried the following: cmd.exe set LANG=en_US \program\Dia\bin\diaw.exe The result was no different from before, i.e I got: * Swedish text for the shape diagrams * Swedish tooltips However, I did notice that the menus actually are in English. OTOH, it turns out they were always in English - I just hadn't noticed. I also tried with LANG=C, as well as launching dia.exe instead of diaw.exe. None of it gives me English tooltips or English names for the shapes. Then I checked if perhaps the value that I'd set LANG was incorrect, and as I couldn't find 'en_US' in ./locale, I tried setting LANG to a value that did have a corresponding directory. There was no change however. However, renaming \program\dia\locale\sv to something else solved the problem. Guess I could just as well have renamed/moved the .mo-file. Should I file a separate bug entry for this problem?
IIRC there arlready is bug report requestinng an UI to switch of localization. If you find it and add some comment we may reconsider the issue ;-)
the localization problem seems to be fixed in SVN
