GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 396994
Use standardized named icon for a11y and eduction (when available)
Last modified: 2010-11-14 02:29:16 UTC
The fd.o Icon Naming Spec defines named icons to use in applications' categories. Those icons are defined here: http://standards.freedesktop.org/icon-naming-spec/latest/ar01s04.html (Table 5) .directory files should use those named icon, currently available in gnome-icon-theme
Created attachment 80330 [details] [review] The patch to change named icons Notes: * applications-science is used for Education.directory (maybe suboptimal) * this change should be notified to icon themes maker * a11y themes should be updated to match new names
Created attachment 82232 [details] [review] change preferences icons too
I've committed the patch and opened bug 434839 for a11y themes. Luca, can you notify other icon theme makers?
Note that Applications.directory.in, Desktop.directory.in, Preferences.directory.in, Settings.directory.in and System-Settings.directory.in still uses some gnome-* files. Any idea what are the best icons for those files?

Besides and OT, could we "sync" .directory files with Main Categories defined in Desktop Menu Spec? Main categories are: AudioVideo, Audio, Video, Development, Education, Game, Graphics, Network, Office, Settings, System, Utility. So, IMHO, we should rename: Multimedia.directory --> AudioVideo.directory Development.directory --> OK Education.directory --> OK Games.directory --> Game.directory Graphics.directory --> OK Internet.directory --> Network.directory Office.directory --> OK Settings.directory --> OK System-Tools.directory --> System.directory Accessories.directory --> Utility.directory Then, using Additional categories: Accessibility.directory --> Utility-Accessibity.directory Hardware.directory --> Settings-HardwareSettings.directory LookAndFeel.directory --> Settings-DesktopSettings.direcoty Settings-Accessibility.directory --> OK System.directory --> Settings-???? InternetAndNetwork.directory --> Settings-Network.directory Personal.directory --> Settings-Personal.directory and so on (I'm sure I'm missing something, but I hope the naming scheme is clear). But note that icon naming spec is using different/additional icon names then desktop menu spec, for example there is no "applications-educational", but there are "applications-science" and applications-engineering" (Science and Engineering are additional categories). Maybe we should update icon naming spec too. I'll try to contact Rodney Dawes about it. PS please also consider to review Comment key in directory files.
Current status: we're only missing two icons in the icon naming spec. The first one is still applications-education and the second is utility-accessibility (or whatever, for the a11y submenu in the applications menu). So we're blocked by the spec here. Luca, can you push things there?
Luca: any news here?
Hmmm.... No, I'll try to ping Rodney Dawes again (added in CC)
can I close this bug? or have any news?
