GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 390473
gnometris trademark/copyright problems
Last modified: 2012-01-31 23:21:10 UTC
Gnometris is not included in Fedora Core because of potential trademark/copyright reasons. These are the relevant bugreports: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=84407 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=148883
Updates from Fedora: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=238651 Perhaps gnometris should be renamed?
As a matter of best practice Gnome applications should try and keep names abstracted from the code so that renaming or rebranding can be easily achieved, and perhaps if the developer who tackles this has the time they might do more than a simple pattern match find and replace but actually abstract the code. (However in a doomed codebase like Gnometris maybe it isn't worth the effort.) I'd suggest "Block fall" as a replacement name or something similarly literal like Block Puzzle (and I like the sounds of Tetra Blocks but if a name as bad as Gnometris causes RedHat problems I expect they wouldn't like that suggestion either). The Tetris game for the OLPC goes by the rather clever name "Block Party", shame it is already taken and we didn't think of it first.
Renaming the game won't change anything. Red Hat will never accept gnometris in any form, regardless of what the non-Red Hat part of Fedora will try or do. It would be nice if there was a bigger and better response, but they've always tried to kill off the issue in bugs or forum posts before it can snowball. AFAIK, they don't do the same for KDE, but nobody likes nor plays KDE games anyway. ;)
Renamed on trunk. Red Hat said they'd accept the rename.
This bug is being reassigned to the "quadrapassel" component so we can close the gnometris bugzilla component. Apologies for the mass email!
