GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 389360
Desktop Wide RSVP upon Single Key Press
Last modified: 2007-01-21 21:29:02 UTC
This is to suggest a built-in rapid serial visualization application for Gnome Desktop Environment. Where a user can simply select & highlight text within any Gnome application to copy to clipboard and a single key press will then cover/fill the desktop with a background color (e.g. black) and play the text word by word at defined speed. In past there have been several attempts to have such an application stabilized for Linux desktops but they merely failed to get much users, most of all for the design and approach those projects followed one famous application Ace Reader for Windows (TM) I believe a newer approach can help make this working much better and should be welcomed warmly by Gnome userbase. This should add more productivity and can also be suitable for Gnome Assistive technologies possibility or some users might prefer for that reason. Though I am not a developer, but back in yearly 2002 I had helped one, now forgotten TCL/TK based RSVP application for my taste and use, and I have continuously looked into other referred below, so I believe this should be easy and quick to implement and efforts to maintain this application should be niche. While that entire Gnome application base can benefit from the same. Known RSVP Applications : - Dictator : http://dictator.kieranholland.com/dictator.html - Gnome RSVP : http://www.icebreaker.net/gnomersvp/ - Gnome Sview : "Dietmar Maurer" <dietmar@maurer-it.com> - Ace Reader : http://acereader.com/ Additional: This might also be useful framework for future works for text-to-speech framework for Gnome Environment. Note: If you consider this feature request is filled for wrong component, please kindly help re-assign.
Firefox also has got a RSVP extention - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2149/
Mmmh, I believe this should be only a simple application. I'm leaving the bug open right now, but I don't think having it in bugzilla can easily help. Finding a developer to do it would be easier. Does it need text-to-speech? Or is it only about showing the words one after another?
(In reply to comment #2) > Does it need text-to-speech? Or is it only about showing the words one after > another? > This is only about showing the words one after another, but I got pointed out by one of my co-worker that perhaps this would be much easier to impliment if considered an extention to alreay existing text to speech framework in Gnome. Please consider re-assign if found to be best suitable.
I started a project some time ago (it's only on my local drive). It's a bit bitrotted an nowhere finished, but "gnome-speedreader" would be a nice project to have :)
Sorry if this sounds harsh, but this really doesn't belong in bugzilla. This isn't a bug in the library called 'gnome-desktop'. This isn't a bug in any of the existing products tracked in gnome bugzilla. We don't really have any "it'd be cool for Gnome to have..." locations in bugzilla to file bugs (other than perhaps the 'general' product, but for that product the reporter or person who reassigns the bug there is responsible for fixing it). This probably belongs better on the wiki or on a mailing list.

I refered : http://www.gnomefiles.org/app.php/Lukutoukka http://koti.welho.com/jpakaste/lukutoukka/ I downloaded ver 0.2 but that would not run after make, please suggest, on list perhaps. $ lukutoukka ERROR: no code for module (gnome-0)
