Description Stephane Delcroix 2006-11-24 19:17:55 UTC
Some crop constraints should be better translated using common metrics measure in the metrics zone.

e.g. the common format for prints in europe is 10 x 15, meaning 10cm by 15cm, not 4 x 3. idem for 4 x 6 that should be translated by 11x15.
Comment 1 Larry Ewing 2006-11-25 17:50:24 UTC
10x15 and 11x15? Is that really what you meant?
Comment 2 Stephane Delcroix 2006-11-25 18:28:13 UTC
10x15 and 11x15 are common print format in europe. 10x15 is the usual for film cameras and some digital cameras (like dslr). 11x15 is the common print format for 4/3 captors, like most of the digital cameras.

but, yeah, sorry, 10x15 is 4x6 and 11x15 is 4x3. sorry for the trouble...

check e.g. the homepage of http://foto.com (a Belgian photo shop) for common print sizes

standard formats in metric
Comment 4 Maxxer 2006-11-27 08:14:43 UTC
Wouldn't it be better if we post here a standard translation for EU formats and then all translators will apply it to their po, eventually doing minor changes?
Comment 5 Stephane Delcroix 2006-11-27 09:24:02 UTC
Maxxer, yeah, go ahead !
Comment 6 Maxxer 2006-11-27 11:15:24 UTC
ok. so if you refeer to messages in src/PhotoView.cs at lines 63~67 someone at IT team already translated it to european formats:

4 x 3  -> 10 x 8
4 x 6  -> 10 x 15
5 x 7  -> 13 x 18
8 x 10 -> 20 x 25

Obviously also the short names have been translated.

ciao

Comment 7 Maxxer 2006-11-27 11:24:09 UTC
I was missing also src/f-spot.glade.h:126

Standard must be followed by 10x15
Comment 8 Stephane Delcroix 2006-11-27 12:18:03 UTC
4x3 is not 10x8, but 11x15

Comment 9 Maxxer 2007-02-02 10:42:48 UTC
As per experience of an italian translator, it would be good to also write the american format along with the translated one.
This because, as happened to this guy, printing to a non translated CUPS will result in unit mismatch and thus to get users "crazy" in understanding which format to use.
So this is what I wrote in the last translation.

#: ../src/PhotoView.cs:64
msgid "4 x 3 (Book)"
msgstr "11 × 15 (4×3)"

#: ../src/PhotoView.cs:65
msgid "4 x 6 (Postcard)"
msgstr "10 × 15 (Cartolina) (4×6)"

#: ../src/PhotoView.cs:66
msgid "5 x 7 (L, 2L)"
msgstr "13 × 18 (L, 2L) (5×7)"

#: ../src/PhotoView.cs:67
msgid "8 x 10"
msgstr "20 × 25 (8×10)"

All these numbers aren't really clear without units.
How a user can understand this: 13 × 18 (L, 2L) (5×7) ?

13 cm x 18 cm (5 in x 7 in)

f-spot is not under active development anymore, has not seen code changes for five years, and saw its last tarball release in the year 2010.
Its codebase has been archived: https://gitlab.gnome.org/Archive/f-spot/commits/master

Closing this report as WONTFIX as part of Bugzilla Housekeeping to reflect reality. Please feel free to reopen this ticket (or rather transfer the project to GNOME Gitlab, as GNOME Bugzilla is deprecated) if anyone takes the responsibility for active development again.
