Description Joachim Noreiko 2006-11-11 10:42:47 UTC
The manual doesn't describe the text field where the user types messages.
What's the correct term for this part of the interface?
Comment 1 Guillaume Desmottes 2006-11-12 17:18:14 UTC
in french i'd say something like "la zone de saisie de texte". :)
Comment 2 Reinout van Schouwen 2006-11-13 19:52:41 UTC
The "Say it!" field??
Comment 3 Rodney Dawes 2006-11-13 21:41:50 UTC
"Text entry field"
Comment 4 Matthew Paul Thomas (mpt) 2006-11-14 01:45:45 UTC
Help needn't describe things that nobody ever has trouble with. If the entry field is auto-focused whenever you start typing, the help need only say "To send a message, type it in the chat window and press Enter".
Comment 5 Joachim Noreiko 2006-11-14 11:06:46 UTC
Rightly or wrongly, there's a convention in gnome user manuals of having a section that lists the different parts of the interface, usually called 'When you start [app]' or 'The [app] window'.
If that's not useful, not necessary, or downright counter-productive, then file a bug against the GDP handbook and I'll happily start ripping them out, as they're the number one place where users can spot that the developers haven't been keeping the docs team up to date.

That said, I probably will need to refer to it in other places.
I was wondering if there's an established term that's used in other IRC/chat applications.

If not, I'm just going to call it the chat line.

FWIW:

MSN messenger calls it "the lower part" of "the conversation window".
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/windowsmessenger/getstarted/sendmessages.mspx

Yahoo messenger calls it the "message input area".
http://help.yahoo.com/us/tutorials/ms7/Mess/im_im1.html

Google Talk just calls it "the box" :)
http://www.google.com/talk/start.html

I think something like "message input pane" would be most consistent with the other terminology we use?
Comment 7 Joachim Noreiko 2006-12-10 15:06:51 UTC
I'm going for message input line because it doesn't seem like a pane.

Fixed in the bzr branch. Closing.
Comment 8 Guillaume Desmottes 2006-12-11 17:13:21 UTC
Fixed in the development version. The fix will be available in the next major release. Thank you for your bug report.
