GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 356093
Windows Network entries use a text icon instead of a computer one
Last modified: 2007-01-27 10:23:04 UTC
That bug has been opened on https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/60277 "I recently tried to browse the Windows Network here on campus, but the icons for networks and systems don't appear until after I (unsucessfully) attempt to open them. Will attach screenshots. http://librarian.launchpad.net/4259057/Screenshot-Windows%20Network%20-%20File%20Browser%20--%20Just%20opened.png Screenshot-Windows Network - File Browser -- Just opened Another unusual symptom is that When in the location "smb:///", each time I press ctrl-R or click the reload button, the icons representing the different workgroups switch between blank, filled with text, and the proper workgroup icon, but not all at the same time, so some will be blank, some will be filled with text, and some might be correct."
There is a series of screenshots at the launchpad report showing the entire process.
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=361951 seems to me to be related
Note that on my computer, I can't open any workgroup / share if it is displayed with a blank icon. I have to refresh the Nautilus window several times until the correct icon appears. Also, when I see the correct icon and refresh, sometimes it is converted back to a blank icon and I can't access the workgroup / share anymore. Some screenshots: http://home.fmf.nl/~writser/ubuntu/asperge_good.png http://home.fmf.nl/~writser/ubuntu/asperge_wrong.png I have a DHCP-network at home, and use Nautilus 2.16.1 (from Ubuntu Edgy). I have not accessed the 'shared folders' applet yet, nor have I edited my samba configuration. So, everything is configured as default.
hit ctrl+l in nautilus and type smb:// hit enter and you'll be able to browse again
Unfortunately that doesn't always work. I do return to the root of the network, but sometimes 'mshome' is still shown as a blank icon. See: http://home.fmf.nl/~writser/ubuntu/smb.png This happened immediately after ctrl+l and typing smb://
see the link i posted above to see what's the actual uri for samba share, while waiting fot the devs to fix this :/

sorry for double posting
I can confirm this bug, and had reported it earlier today on the launchpad website: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/gnome-vfs2/+bug/68611 Appeared on both Ubuntu Edgy systems I tested this on. On my Ubuntu 6.06 system, this works fine (Nautilus 2.14.3).
fixed with CVS according to the ChangeLog
awesome!

Sebastien: How has this been fixed? I could still reproduce it today without a patch I hacked up recently: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-vfs-list/2006-December/msg00009.html
It has been fixed by alex some weeks ago: http://cvs.gnome.org/viewcvs/gnome-vfs/daemon/daemon-connection.c?r1=1.4&r2=1.5 The fix has been tested by different people and works fine
