Description jbaker 2006-09-13 12:04:56 UTC
File > Preferences > Interface...

In the label "Default layer & channel preview size:" the mnemonic is set on the lower case "l" in "layer" - which ends up being one or two pixels which is really hard to see...

Other information:
Does the developer group want this kind of info ? - I've ran across a few of these type of minor, minor things in the past but never mentioned any before... So I'm kind of testing the waters with this one...

Sure, let us know about these issues. We are well aware about the rules for mnemonics but sometimes it's difficult to come up with good mnemonics. It would be nice if you could also propose a solution.

Usually we want a separate bug report for each issue but for small things such as mnemonics this would mean too much extra work, so feel free to add more here.

	* app/dialogs/preferences-dialog.c: changed mnemonics (bug #355761).
Comment 3 david gowers 2006-09-13 22:29:00 UTC
This is for mnemonics in general or the preference dialog mnemonics?

Anyway:

* Image Windows->'While space bar is pressed' is missing a mnemonic (p seems the obvious choice)
* 'Configure input controller' could be more keyboard-friendly by providing a mnemonic for 'Enable this controller' (Everything is available). Maybe there is a reason for this that I don't know.

* Appearance is one of the rare cases where I agree with duplicating a mnemonic.
A list of duplicate mnemonics that are more annoying and wrong than useful follows:

  * Colours submenu: Map conflicts with Posterize. Since the Map submenu is more important than MaxRGB. I suggest to assign 'x' to MaxRGB plugin so that 'm' can be assigned to Map.
Curves conflicts with Components submenu-- suggest 'o' for Components

  * Tools submenu: Paths conflicts with Paint tools -- suggest 'h'

  * Edit submenu: 'Preferences' and 'Keyboard shortcuts'. I think it is safe to remove the mnemonic of Preferences, and either remove the mnemonic of Keyboard shortcuts or reassign it to 'y'

  * Layer submenu: Autocrop layer conflicts with Transparency -- suggest 'y' or maybe 'p' for Transparency.

* Image->Image properties should probably have a mnemonic, and 'e' or 'o' is available.

I have taken care of these now except for the issues you mentioned in the Edit submenu. I dislike the solutions you proposed because one should avoid putting mnemnonics on characters with descenders (http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/2.0/input-keyboard.html#choosing-access-keys).
Comment 5 david gowers 2006-09-14 09:12:30 UTC
Reviewing:

'n' is the only non-conflicting mnemonic for Preferences, but then it introduces a different conflict with <Toolbox>/File->New, if I understand the menu registration correctly.

Looking at 'keyboard shortcuts', 'd' is probably the best mnemonic then.
Comment 6 Sven Neumann 2006-11-05 13:36:13 UTC
Preferences and Keyboard shortcuts probably don't need mnemonics, users shouldn't have to use them frequenty. Closing as FIXED.
Comment 7 david gowers 2006-11-05 22:32:40 UTC
In that case, you should have actually removed their mnemonics before closing this. They presently have mnemonics.
