This stack trace is somewhat dubious: gtk_container_forall certainly does not call, even indirectly, gtk_widget_style_get... Ben: This bug report isn't very useful because the stack trace doesn't describe the bug well. If you have time and can still reproduce the bug, please read http://bugzilla.gnome.org/bug-HOWTO.html and add a description of how to reproduce this bug. You'll also need to add a stack trace; please see http://live.gnome.org/GettingTraces for more information about how to do so.
not sure if i'll be able to reproduce this, but i was just changing through icon themes and terminal crashed. i was running xgl at the same time.

See http://live.gnome.org/GettingTraces/DistroSpecificInstructions for more information. Thanks a lot in advance, your help is appreciated!
I was also running XGL (+ Compiz) at the time.

I followed the steps in the bug and in the GettingTraces docs but was not able to reproduce a crash. In my original (bug 355453) report, the terminal crashed while running an apt-get command. I have not been able to reproduce this through normal use on any of my ubuntu edgy eft machines in about a month.

Bug 364807 is most likely the same bug; this time, luckily, I had the debuginfo installed before the bug triggered. The traces should be more complete. The bug is still non deterministic. If I need debuginfo for more packages, let me know ... although it may be a while before I encounter the bug again.

Why is this bug still tagged NEEDINFO? What info is needed? There seem to be an abundance of traces in DUPs that have debugging information. Can the developer or maintainer please respond to indicate that this bug hasn't been abandoned?
Having looked at most of the dups, I have not yet neither been able to see what causes this nor reproduce it even once. Most (all?) the stack traces in the dups are essentially generic, and it seems necessary to be able to poke at the state of the application to see why exactly something is getting a broken style.
This is in reference to Bug 373881, which had been marked as a duplicate of 353498. My system configuration: Celeron 2GHz, 512MB RAM, i845 chipset, connected to internet via USB to ethernet adapter (auto detected by OS) OS running: Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy), dual boot to windows 2000 The system status at the point terminal crashed: 1. Running Beryl+AIGLX 2. Desktop 1 running firefox 3. Desktop 2 running terminal from which synaptic is launched. 4. sources.lst contains all the repositories enabled (including universe and multiverse) 5. when I started installing pptp, terminal crashed. 6. I had opened terminal again, ran synaptic and installed pptp -> no issues observed. I will try to reproduce this with traces as mentioned in the previous comments.

HI! i'm the one who initiated this bug report ... i've noticed that my info was too short, so i'm here to add some details, the machne was running vmware in another desktop, in my desktop there was a terminal, who was running ogg2mp recursively on a directory shared betwen the "host" machine and the "guest" machine (to use vm ware terms), the same directory was at the same time been readed by e-mule who was running on the emulated machine ("guest"), the emulated machine is windows xp64 professional VLK, and yes i was running compiz 0.1.2 beta whitout XGL but whit the new Nvidia driver... my system is and amd3200+(venice) i have 1Gb ram (cheaper one) and i'm running ubuntu edgy eft final. I hope this help... i think it's due to a simultaneos read of the same file ...

I submitted one of the many duplicates (381768), so I'll throw in the only info I can add: 1. I too am running AIGLX+Beryl. That appears to be a common theme in those who have posted. 2. At the time I noticed the crash/bug report dialog, I was in GTK-GNUtella. However, it had not popped to the front, so it might have been sitting there for some time. The only other applications open were Gedit and Abiword. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Will try to help. Trying to reproduce the bug now. At time of crash had Azureus running using NFS shares to host the files (one of the torrents being several 10's of gigs in size), had a Firefox loaded as well as the Bluefish Editor. Firefox had 2 tabs open, one being the website I was working on as well as FireFTP loaded and connected. The terminal that crashed was doing a x264 encode of a 2.5 hour movie. When I get more time, I will install the debug version of the terminal and see if I can get it to crash once again. As far as system, Pentium M 1.87Ghz running at 800Mhz, 2Gb Ram and a 60Gb HDD with 20B full. Hope that helps somewhat.
admiraltex, would be awesome if you could provide a stacktrace with debug symbols, so we can hopefully find out what's exactly going wrong here. your description does not make clear if it is the same crash as this one here (it could also be bug 348979 that you ran into), but any good stacktraces are very welcome! :-) if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Dear reporters, thanks a lot for providing additional info, but we really need a better stacktrace, so this crash can be reproduced. Can you please help the developers to fix this by installing additional packages[1], running gnome-terminal as normal, trying to reproduce the crash and attaching the stacktrace here? Your help is very appreciated! [1] OpenSuse 10.2 and Fedora Core 6: please install glib2-debuginfo, gtk-debuginfo and gnome-terminal-debuginfo. Ubuntu 6.10: please install libglib2.0-0-dbg and libgtk2.0-0-dbg.

(In reply to comment #175) > Guilherme: perhaps the stacktrace of bug 359614 with symbols and line numbers > is a > duplicate and could be helpful to nail this down? I was the raiser of bug 387098, which ocurred when I had no debug packages installed into my FC6. That bug was marked dup of this one. I'd like to mention, I raised another bug 395481, which ocurred after I installed the debug packages as requested. I don't know if the circumstances of the two crashes were the same, but perhaps that will help.

(In reply to comment #1) > This stack trace is somewhat dubious: gtk_container_forall certainly does not > call, even indirectly, gtk_widget_style_get... It certainly does: gtk_container_forall is provided a callback. I think what's happening here is similar to epiphany bug 353503: something causes a theme change (like installing a new theme package, or new icons in the icon cache, either by "make install" or "apt-get install something"), and then _on idle_, gtk resets the styles. The style reset recurses over the widget hierarchy (that's those gtk_container_forall calls, most probably with gtkwidget.c:reset_rc_styles_recurse callback). [Don't trust the symbol names; when static functions are involved those are often wrong.]

I found a potential source for this problem: in vte.c prior to this recent commit: http://svn.gnome.org/viewcvs/vte/trunk/src/vte.c?rev=1443&r1=1438&r2=1443 the code did gtk_style_attach(widget->style, widget->window); while it should do, and now does: widget->style = gtk_style_attach(widget->style, widget->window); This fix should really be merged to the gnome-2-16 branch...
