Description Rich Burridge 2006-08-29 19:15:01 UTC
[This is an Orca bug that currently depends upon a bug in another GNOME
 module. It's been opened here so that if the problem is reported again,
 it can be closed as a duplicate of this bug. Once the other module
 problem is fixed, we will be easily able to check whether it fixes the
 original Orca problem].

Steps to reproduce:

* Start up Orca.
* Start up Evolution mail.
* Compose a new message.
* Type something in the message body such as:

  The quick brown fox
  jumps over the lazy dog.

* Position the caret on one of those two lines.
* Hold the shift key down. Hit the left/right
  arrows as appropriate to select text.

Nothing is spoken. The select text and it's current state
(selected/unselected) should be spoken.

Thank you! We'll keep this blocks/depends relationship so Orca users that read the Orca bug reports know that we're aware of this and are tracking it.
Comment 2 Willie Walker 2007-04-20 17:23:35 UTC
The blocker for this has been marked as FIXED, so I'm changing this one to pending. If someone is able to verify the fix works, it would be great.
Comment 3 Mike Pedersen 2007-05-03 15:46:32 UTC
It has been reported on the orca list that this now works for selecting by character but not word or line. More testing is needing on this one.
Comment 4 Willie Walker 2007-05-14 22:35:58 UTC
Removing pending based upon Mike's comments. Rich, can you please dig into this one?
Comment 5 Rich Burridge 2007-05-15 12:01:54 UTC
I've reopened bug #347347. Krister has kindly provided Yi Jin
with enough information. Currently reclassifying this one as
"[blocked]".

Removing target milestone from [blocked] bugs. We have little control over them, so we're better off letting priority and severity be our guide for poking the related components.

Rich, while testing the patch to bug 456296 it dawned on me that text selection in Evolution now works (at least in version 2.11.5) and is spoken (and displayed in braille. :-) ). So I think we're good on this one.
Comment 8 Rich Burridge 2007-07-12 18:14:01 UTC
Excellent! As you tested and found it, please feel free to close it
and micro-increment your points rating. ;-) Thanks.
Comment 9 Joanmarie Diggs (IRC: joanie) 2007-07-12 18:34:08 UTC
As much as I would love to micro-increment my point rating.... ;-) UPDATE: We're good for selection by character and selection by word, but NOT selection by line. :-(

Seems that when moving from line to line when Shift is not held down we get two events: focus: and object:property-change:accessible-parent. These are missing when selecting by line with Shift+Up/Down (as are caret-moved events).

Sorry about that!

Are these things we can handle in Orca, or should we open a new bug with Evolution?
Comment 11 Joanmarie Diggs (IRC: joanie) 2007-07-24 17:21:58 UTC
> Are these things we can handle in Orca,

From what I've seen, no. I am not getting any events whatsoever when Shift+Up/Shift+Down is pressed.

> or should we open a new bug with Evolution?

Wasn't sure. Looking at this comment http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=347347#c21, they are aware of the problem. However the "enhancement" suggestion in the following comment makes me think this is not going to be a high priority.
Comment 12 Joanmarie Diggs (IRC: joanie) 2012-08-14 21:01:35 UTC
Closing this out given that it's been open for 5 years, is tracked by the actual Evolution bug, and is not something I can fix in Orca even if I wanted to. :(
