Description Quim Gil 2006-08-28 07:57:31 UTC
Luke St. Clair reports that http://www.gnome.org/start/getstable.html is outdated (confirmed). How he arrived to that page is a mistery to me, but if he found it other users can find it. We should delete it, since it seems not to be linked from any other wgo page.

On the other hand, it is a bit unprofessional that the basic reference for getting the latest GNOME releases lives in Davyd's personal space: http://www.gnome.org/~davyd/footware.shtml

Can we move Davyd's page to wgo and link it from the release notes, etc? Or at least offer a nicer URL.

There is a (slightly outdated) copy of the script to generate this page in revision control somewhere. The output of the script can be Server Side Included (SSI) if you want to create a different page with the same data.

The easiest way to make it work is to link to /home/users/davyd/footware/distros[12].html, see /home/users/davyd/public_html/footware.shtml for how to do the includes.

Another option would be to do a redirect of some description.

Alternatively you could run a separate copy of the script, but then it gets harder for me to maintain (it does require some occasional tweaking to keep functioning).

In the revamped wgo there is a "Try GNOME" page in the "Get Started" section - see http://live.gnome.org/GnomeWeb/Navigation for more information.

This website will be CMS based, so adding a script on that page should be easy, avoiding any CVS/SSH hassle to keep that script or include up to date.

Since my role is to advocate for wgo ;) I must say I trust better a script hosted in our site that an import from external data in a server we don't control. But I also understand your concern about having to keep 2 pages updated.

Mmm wouldn't it be easier and better to have "your" Footware be converted to the Try GNOME page in wgo and in the GNOME servers?

I'm afraid you've confused me a little.

If we're going to a CMS (which CMS?) can our CMS be integrated with the script? We don't want the script to run every time someone accesses the page (it takes around 2-3 minutes to run, and would probably piss off Distrowatch). So we need to be able to run the script from cron and have the CMS only include the output.

Sorry for the confusion.

We are going to a CMS, not decided yet - http://live.gnome.org/GnomeWeb/CmsRequirements

Once the CMS is decided and installed we have plenty of time to see how the script and its output can be better integrated. See the 2.18 milestones at http://live.gnome.org/GnomeWeb/DevelopmentTimeline

The objective is to have everything up & running by the wgo revamped release on March 14th. The proposal to you is to have your script well integrated to wgo by then. You decide how.

Added a redirect. There are some scripts to update the getstable.html page as well, however these have the following problems:
1. Rely on some non-executable script being executable
2. Do not work.
