Binary package hint: gnome-media

Hey,

I've noticed this bug in kde in the past, but only recently started using ubuntu (and thus, gnome).

Basically, I've got an Audigy 1 ES:
$ amixer info
Card default 'Audigy'/'Audigy 1 ES [SB0160] (rev.3, serial:0x521102) at 0xb880, irq 66'
  Mixer name : 'SigmaTel STAC9721,23'
  Components : 'AC97a:83847609'
  Controls : 199
  Simple ctrls : 33
using alsa for the drivers.
In recent 2.6 kernels, the alsa drivers provide separate, but similarly named, controls for the capture and output bass control, trebel control, and the tone switch.

Unfortunately, gnome-volume-control in the gnome-media package can't distinguish between the capture and output versions of this control, so you get multiple indistinguishable entries in the preferences dialog.
Additionally, since the controls are indistinguishable, it only adds the first one to the slider/switch views, and capture seems to come 'first' in most cases. This means that one cannot reliably modify the tone controls using gnome-volume-control.

This is really an upstream issue, and it's hardly a major one, but it is mildly irritating, particularly since i've already helped one audio tool fix it once. :)

Basically, the controls really need a flag saying whether they're for capture or output (where there's multiples) for clarity as far as the user's concerned and the ability to remember which is which, so it can control them properly.

Thanks
Andrew

Does the path from 336075 help?

karianne, any news here?

No news from the original reporter. I'd suggest to close the bug (as the patch was committed to CVS 4 months ago). I will close the Ubuntu bug also.
