GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 350675
cash flow forecast graph report
Last modified: 2018-06-29 21:11:11 UTC
The one feature that I found most useful in my years of using Money and (half year) of using Quicken was the "cash flow forecast". This was a simple 'days vs. $' bar or line chart that used current balance and transactions in a register and scheduled transactions to predict balance in the chosen account(s). A very quick and convenient way to see which day your account would hit minimums and how much $ you would have each day for the next month or two. alternatively, a quick way to transfer scheduled transactions into a budget would also perform similarly in gnucash...
Sounds like an interesting feature. However, I think this is quite complicated to be implemented in gnucash right now. Regarding future scheduled transactions, there is the RFE bug#346744 which asks for "only" the forecast of the upcoming scheduled transactions, and even that is currently not available. This would probably be a first step to implement such a report. As a second step, you would implement the actual extrapolation of cash flow from existing transactions into the future... well, thinking about it, this is probably independent from the above. This extrapolation could very well be implemented on the booked transactions right away, regardless whether they have been created from scheduled transactions or manually. In summary, yes, this would be a nice feature and it's probably possible to implement this by just writing yet another report (in scheme), but currently nobody is working on it.
FWIW, I'd also like to see this implemented. It looks like this topic has been visited in the past on the mailing list, now that 2.x is released, it would definitely be nice to see this as a planned feature.
I too would like to have this feature added. It doesn't have to be super complicated, as it can pull from the Scheduled Transactions data and potentially Budget data. Extrapolation from past transactions surely would be overly cumbersome to implement. I tried to do this with an Income/Expense Chart report, starting with "Today" and ending with "Current Quarter." I'd prefer a Today to 30 or 90 Days from now but it was just a test with current options, and from my limited experience I see that it reports "No Data" and with similar settings a Net Worth Barchart does not change with my supplied Scheduled Transactions. A line- rather than bar-graph would be best for this $/per day report. I am a recent convert from Money 2004 and this is my most missed function. Allowing Scheduled Transaction to influence these forward-looking graphs would be really useful for we college students trying to keep our checking accounts in the black for 30 to 90 days at a time! Thanks developers for your hard work! Rob
This is a definite need to have if you are moving from MS Money. I don't think the MS Money version of this takes in to account budgets only scheduled transactions, so in theory should fairly simple to do. Anything I can do to help?

I would like to join the group and request this important feature. Exists both in Money & Quicken. I found the Forecast cashflow reports as essantial. thank you. Ami.

I think bug #570011 is the foundation for this bug, and is the order I would like to tackle them in. Bugzilla won't let me set the dependency though. I'd be happy to become assignee for both these bugs if people want. You can find my first attempts at [figuring out how to do] these reports here: http://github.com/timabell/gnucash-account-balance-chart
