Google Video Player includes a feature "View, Show Thumbnails"

This creates an on screen display showing thumbnails (keyframes I guess) to represent various sections of the current video file much like a chapter display on certain DVD. (Screenshot to follow.)

This makes video navigation/skipping signifcantly easier and it is a fantastic feature I would love to be able to see in Gstreamer based programs such as Totem and could possibly be of use is a video editor such as Pitivi. Filing the request here first in case it can be useful as a general case, but if not then let me know and I will refile the request against individual applications such as Totem.

This does look quite neat, but it seems to me this would indeed be something that should rather be implemented in the individual applications where it makes sense. There isn't really too much GStreamer can provide here besides the functionality and API to make it easy to retrieve these snapshots (which I believe we have already).

closing, please file against an application.
