Description Damian 2006-08-01 15:24:37 UTC
Reproduce bug:
1. Add gdict-applet to panel
2. search for a word and make a spelling error
Result: displays spelling error message and thats it...no alternative spelling feature used

Hi,

I have seen great improvements in the latest version of gdict like alternative word suggestions on spelling errors and this feature has made gdict finally usable for me. However, the gdict-applet doesn't incorporate the alternative words on spelling error feature and this lack of a feature in the applet just gives me an error message when I make a spelling error. This forces me to use something like dictionary.com or stardict itself to decipher my error, and by then I'd just use those utilities to look up my word. At least for me, chances are if I am unfamiliar with a complicated word, it would be highly likely I wouldn't be able to spell it, but of course, this varies. This does not appeal to us poor spellers.

So my request is to incorporate the alternative spell feature into the gdict-applet to make it as useful as the main interface. I understand there might be interface issues like cluttering the drop down definition dialog, but my suggestion would be to add a drop down list or combo box with the alternative words under the definition dialog or wherever you see fit. I think this would minimize expanding the interface and preserving user screen real estate.

Thanks for the great work and wonderful improvements!

Damian

the idea of using a drop-down list is what I considered for the applet. either that or adding a notebook replicating the contents of the side bar of the main application.

right now we are in feature/UI freeze and way past the point I can make such a change; I'll punt it for the next development cycle.

The applet doesn't exist anymore since GNOME 3.0.
