Description Andreas Proschofsky 2006-07-20 08:54:15 UTC
Please describe the problem:
With the new search feature in 2.7.x, there is the possibility to look for "important" mail. Unfortunately this looks for the ones which have the Label "important" and not the ones which are marked important (which I think a lot more people use as it more prominently placed). I find this quite misleading, cause there is no quick way for me to check all my important mails, though it looks like.

btw: Why does evolution have the default label "important" if there is the possibility to mark messages as "important" anyway? Could maybe the label be removed and all the messages using it moved over to be "marked important" instead.

Steps to reproduce:
1.
2.
3.

Does this happen every time?

hmm... the entire search blog clearly shows the names of your five labels... there is even a "no label" search. to me it's pretty clear, anyway...

Maybe I was not quite clear about what I'm talking

Yes the search shows the different label searches, but it has no entry for mails that are MARKED (and NOT labeled) important, which is a functionality that a lot more people are using, cause you can mark them this way just with a single-click in the headlines-panel. I'll add a screenshot to illustrate this issue.

Mark and Label important

As you can see there is one menu entry for marking mails important and one for labeling them as important, the new search only allows to look for the ones which are labeled important. (Also it's quite illogical to have this in two places, but that's maybe another bug)
Comment 4 André Klapper 2006-07-20 11:54:43 UTC
okay - now you can also sort by the important column by a single click on the column header, so why duplicate that functionality? :-)

And what if I want to see all the important mails in all mail-folders in one view? ;) (btw: in this line of argumentation one could also remove the "unread messages"-search as this would also count as duplicated functionality...)

damn, now you have won! ;-)

adding srini in CC list.

Nice one :). Btw, the quick search plays only for the message list. For a search like, show all important messages in all folders can be a "advanced search on ALL folders". Any way your original request is valid. Could add that. But this quick search bar is supposed to feature a customizable i/f which is not implemented. Should be there in the next release. You still really want this?

Im sure other 100 people can find such important 100 things :)

You are right, my bad, should have seen that this really only applies to the current message list.

Anyway: I still think it would be good to have the ability to look for messages marked as important, as this is - in my opinion - more important than the labels stuff.

What I would propose (if it's easily doable):

*) Remove the default label "Important", instead MARK all the mails who had this label as "important"

*) Add an entry "Important Messages" to the quicksearch, which displays the ones that are marked as important

This way no extra-entry will clutter the quick-search menu, and also this usability-wise very bad idea of having to different "important"-settings is cleaned up

Yes, but not all of them file bugs ;p

If you dont see it that way, it is not your problem. It is the UI's problem. So definitely a good input for me to think more.

I would still prefer to have the labels, and have another "Important messages" tab. All the entries has to be attached with COLOR and ICONS, so that it describes what it is supposed to mean :)

True :)

fixed in 2.7.92 - both the labels and the important column are implemented now.
