GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 341722
do not create .Trash-$USER on non-local mounts
Last modified: 2021-06-18 15:13:34 UTC
It would be nice if nautilus would not create .Trash-$USER directories when deleting files on non-local volumes. There is the "Include a delete command that bypasses Trash" option but this is not enough - more generic solution would be much better. Having to keep track whether particular file/directory resides on local/non-local disk is not very user-friendly. Some ideas: - allow user to specify which volumes are non-local - auto-detect non-local volumes - allow user to select desired behavior (create/do not create or rather use/do not use Trash folder for non-local mounts)

I vote for this. I think it is reasonable to let the user choose whether non-local+non-fixed(floppy,usb) media should be trash-enabled. I write this with taking into account that new options should be added very cautiously.
*BUMP* Same here, GNOME 2.16.x. My (NFS) fileserver has .Trash-$USER directories strewn all over the place from clients browsing its exports with nautilus, and deleting their documents, photos, MP3s, etc. I also vote for nautilus preferences along the lines of: [ ] enable Trash for non-local filesystems [ ] use local Trash for non-local filesystems [ ] enable Trash for removable drives and media [ ] use local Trash for removable drives and media The user's local ~/.Trash folder could use appropriate subdirectories (names derived from the corresponding nautilus URIs) for items deleted from non-local places.
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version of Files (nautilus), then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
