GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 340599
some SVG themes for same-gnome
Last modified: 2012-01-31 23:20:56 UTC
Here are some SVG themes for the Same Gnome game, maybe you like one of them (animations are not very elaborate)
Created attachment 64791 [details] simple balls tar.gz as the file was bigger than the allowed zise for attachments
Created attachment 64792 [details] glassy balls
Created attachment 64793 [details] fruits
Created attachment 64794 [details] squares
I've only had a chance to have a quick look. Simple Balls: While stationary they look fantastic and are a good candidate for solving bug #300501. However their animation does not stand our very well. To be more specific: ther is very low contrast on the yellow balls and it is hard to see them spinning. Since the animation is an important cue for same-gnome, would it be possible to either find a way to make the animation stand out more or - more simply I suspect - change the yellow balls to a darker colour? (Even a dark orange might work.) Glassy Balls obviously gets around this problem by having a high contrast animation state. Squares also suffers a little from the animation contrast problem with the yellow squares. In the blink set, which this is very similar to, an "inversion" effect is used to get the contrast. It is slightly odd, but effective.
Created attachment 64802 [details] simple balls - updated replacement with more contrast on the yellow balls
Created attachment 64810 [details] glassy balls - updated the inner glow is now at bottom-center
Created attachment 64846 [details] gnome balls balls featuring the Gnome foot
Created attachment 64847 [details] feet 3D rotating Gnome logos
First, my apologies, since this post is going to sound much more negative than I want it to. On the positive side, I think we can do something with "simple balls", though I'm temped to trace some animated 3d models to replace the swirl. :) - I think there's still a contrast problem with the simple balls theme, the gray swirl just doesn't stand out against both the green color and the gradients. - I'm mostly against the gnome logo as a key element any of our themes these days. It's hard enough getting aesthetically pleasing themes, and GNOME branding just gets in the way of that goal and world domination. Ideally, we want people to be in awe of the SVG graphics, and the foot ain't gonna do it no matter how much work is put into it. It's a crutch. - One problem with the themes (fruits being the exception) is that all of the elements are the same, with only variations in the colors[*]. Ideally, "simple balls" would have variation from one color to another, and the animation would look like a rolling marble rather than a spinning steering wheel. I understand that you may have simply been following the legacy of older themes... Feel free to break from those traditions. :) As a big bonus, you'll be helping out people who are color blind. - [*] [Criticism not directed at the art nor Nicu: ] Technically, there's one sort of situation where switching colors like that is actually cool, and that's when SVG symbols, transformations, and styles are used to turn it into a mean little file. But, wow.... "simple balls" should never be over 1MB unpacked, even if all the paths are spelled out in the file. The "glassy balls" theme is larger than all of the source code and SVG imagery for the entire game of Klotski. I freely admit, if we did take in a version of simple balls (likely), I would probably give the thing heavy dose of elbow grease in Illustrator and vim, bring it down to about 20KB. In short, this isn't really a problem you or other Inkscape artists should fret about unless you really want to.
Ideally, simple (and/or glassy or combination of both) would look a bit more like the "Glass Marbles" theme from Four In A Row
The old Same GNOME has been completely rewritten and redesigned and is now called Swell Foop. Please feel free to move this bug to the new component if you feel that it still applies to the new version.
