Description alex bodnaru 2006-05-03 01:38:44 UTC
Distribution: Debian testing/unstable
Package: gnome-applets
Severity: Normal
Version: GNOME2.14.0 unspecified
Gnome-Distributor: Debian
Synopsis: nls configuration of the keyboard switcher causes x-window to crash. examples included
Bugzilla-Product: gnome-applets
Bugzilla-Component: keyboard indicator (gswitchit)
Bugzilla-Version: unspecified
Description:
Description of Problem:
after adding a keyboard layout or a language switching option, the
.gconf contains
the configured option, but x-window crashes untill i remove the
options.
this happens with xserver-xorg-6.90, intermitently with gnome-vfs-2.12,
and constantly
with gnome-vfs-2.14.
maybe an api change in 6.90 as oposed to previous 6.82?

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. enter Desktop|Preferences|Keyboard, or open keyboard preferences of
gswitchit, and add a keyboard layout/option.
2. alternatively, add the attached files to your configuration, and
login to gnome.
3. please ensure you can connect the computer remotely, to reboot
cleanly. using the big file does refuse login, but you
can still switch consoles to reboot. otherways, i recommend ssh.

Actual Results:
x darks the screen, and mangles the console terminals also.

Expected Results:
gnome/metacity, you know ...

How often does this happen?
everytime

Additional Information:
please note that the included file is a shell arhive, just remove the
.txt extension to expand.

the underlying x code should be correct, as i can switch the keyboard layout using:

setxkbmap -option grp:switch,grp:alt_shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll us,il

I cannot reproduce this bug report, on Ubuntu 5.10 or Ubuntu 6.06.

It is possible the issue relates to Xorg 6.9 as used in Debian.
When "xkeyboard-config" is not used, the situation is a bit unpredictable.
Does anyone know if Debian has switched from xkbdata to xkeyboard-config?

this bug does no manifest with xsserver-xorg 7

Thanks for the update.

Is xserver-xorg-7 the new default in Debian testing?
It is possible that the bug appears only in Debian testing due to the development nature, and now has stabilised.
If that is the case, I think I can close the report.

I am closing the bug as NOTABUG; in the sense it occured at some point in the lifetime of Debian experimental and now it has been resolved.

Thanks Alex.
