GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 340390
evolution duplicates contacts when "instant mesaging contacts" is enabled
Last modified: 2012-08-07 10:56:44 UTC
Please describe the problem: the problem is that evolution keeps adding duplicate contacs when "automatic contacs" is activated, because it syncs with gaim, but puts the icq numbers of buddys in the aim field and not in the icq field. but gaim doesn't even differentiate between these two. to solution is to merge these two fields (aim and icq) to one (aim/icq) when storing a new contact and also when displaying. not even gaim uses differnet account setting for aim and icq because they are technically the same. Steps to reproduce: 1. activate instant messaging contacts 2. click on "sync now" (or what it's called in english) or enable "sync regulary" 3. new contacts are added even if a contact with the same name and icq number exists Actual results: contacts get duplicated Expected results: evolution should keep in sync with gaim, without messing up your adressbook. i expect that evolution recognizes contacts which have the same icq/aim number but slightly different names in evolution or gaim. Does this happen every time? yes Other information: i made some modifications to the contact editor in gimp: www.krg-nw.de/_intern/soc/Kontakteditor.png
I have the problem too, and HAVE had for several years. In my particular case, all the...evolution...(pardon the pun) of my home directory has been from ugrades, not re-installs. This might have something to do with it. And I can't be the second soul in this big Gnome world to have the problem. I'm running Ubuntu Dapper these days (very nice Gnome install, BTW; kudos!) with Evolution 2.6.1, Gaim 1.5.1cvs (I didn't get it from CVS). I've tried removing all the .gaim directory and starting again; that doesn't change anything. It must be on the Evolution side of things. If I knew where "Personal" is stored, I'd copy it and nuke it, in theory allowing Evolution to start from scratch. I'm available every day for discussions on this topic; I have a little background in programming, but not a ton. (It keeps changing before I get a chance to get good at it.) I'm also open to setting up an SSH login for someone to login and see the information directly, if that's needed. I'm happy to supply whatever is needed so I can enjoy the benefits of this thing working as intended. Color me: Helpful. :)
I can confirm this problem. I am running the same versions and distribution as the previous reporters. One of my address books has exploded in size because of all the duplicated entries.
I can also confirm the issue. I found that in both Ubuntu Edgy and Ubuntu Edgy 64-bits This is a very annoying problem, because I see the contacts added but when I change their names and sync, all the contacts are added again. Besides, the contacts are added just with their IM. They don't import anything else (like ICQ profile) and only put MSN info (doesn't add an e-mail) so that I manually have to copy-paste every MSN e-mail, because Evolution doesn't recognize it as e-mail and won't allow me to add the contact from the new e-mail window.
I can confirm this too. On ubuntu Feisty. In my opinion Gaim/Evolution integration should also integrate things like metacontacts in Gaim, and it alias in Gaim should equate to nickname in Evolution
can confirm this bug still exists for both Pidgin 2.0.2 and Evolution 2.10.2
Pidgin 2.2.1 and Evolution 2.12.0 still suffer this bug.
