On the other hand, if Epiphany's name really is "GNOME Web Browser", it shouldn't be called "Epiphany Web Browser" in the menu of applications.
Comment 1 Christian Persch 2006-04-11 19:05:04 UTC
I'll change the "comments" section in cvs.

The name really is (GNOME) Web Browser; the menu item name was changed in bug 117661 (back then our name was still "Epiphany")... maybe we need to revisit this issue.
Comment 2 Sergej Kotliar 2006-04-11 22:52:53 UTC
Well, the bugs are filed under Epiphany, so I think it's fair that people know what it is called... Just as the case is with Nautilus, Metacity and such...

Another needed thing is for Bug Buddy (and bugzilla) to show the names as they are shown in the Applications menu... so the bugs can keep coming in...
Comment 3 Christian Persch 2006-04-11 23:00:27 UTC
For bugs, I'd rather have a menu item under for exactly this than requiring the user to find bug-buddy on his own...
Comment 4 Matthew Paul Thomas (mpt) 2006-04-12 03:19:20 UTC
Most of the people who we'd like to use this browser won't ever consciously use "GNOME", they'll use Ubuntu / Red Hat / SuSE / whatever. So there's no benefit from calling it "GNOME Web Browser" rather than "Epiphany Web Browser" unless:
(a) The name "GNOME" is cooler than "Epiphany". But the opposite is true on
several levels (capitalization being only one of them).
(b) Distributors can be expected to patch it to "Ubuntu Web Browser", "Red
Hat Web Browser", "SuSE Web Browser", etc. Evidence this won't happen
can be found in the fact that none of them have done anything to fix the
    name of the GIMP.

Calling it "Web Browser" would make more sense, were it not for the fact that most of the people who we'd like to use this Web browser, even if they're using a compatible OS, are currently using another Web browser and need to be persuaded to switch.

The comment text in About now reads like suggested in comment 0:

Lets you view web pages and find information on the internet.
Powered by Gecko 1.8

I'm still reluctant to mention "Epiphany" since I really hate that name and want to erase it...
Comment 6 Christian Persch 2006-08-17 14:04:59 UTC
Mass changing target 2.16 -> 2.18
Comment 7 Jonh Wendell 2006-10-25 15:00:53 UTC
Please, put the software name in about box. Epiphany or not, just put it there.
The people report bug and they even know the package's name.

I'm waiting for it in 2.18 :)

Thanks.
Comment 8 Matthew Paul Thomas (mpt) 2006-11-21 20:13:48 UTC
If you really hate the name "Epiphany", that's fine, rename it when you next make major changes to the interface and feature set. But "Web Browser" is not a viable name in such a competitive genre.
Comment 9 Christian Persch 2007-03-12 12:25:20 UTC
Moving to 2.20 target due to feature and UI freeze for 2.18.
Comment 10 Xan Lopez 2009-01-20 22:56:18 UTC
If you hate 'Epiphany', GNOME 3.0 is not that far away, and that would be a good opportunity to change it. Just saying :)

It now says 'Web'. Closing. Also consider that we might get rid of the about box sometime soon.

Hmm. I don't really like the idea that contributors would lose the little bit of recognition that they get through the Credits in the About box!

Rid of it for a about: page, which likely will have the credits! :)
