Description Wouter Bolsterlee (uws) 2006-04-06 10:08:20 UTC
If Totem is launched with multiple file arguments (as is the case if you select some media files from Nautilus and then choose Open) the playlist sidebar should be visible by default.
Comment 1 Sergej Kotliar 2006-04-06 10:50:55 UTC
Yeah, I'm surprised it doesn't do that already...

Proposed fix

Show the playlist if we load multiple files.

That would be the most annoying thing.
If you have a patch to do that on startup, respecting the window size as well, please attach it here.

Ubuntu bug about that: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/totem/+bug/38709

"I like that Totem is clever enough to remember how I last had my sidebar (collapsed/hidden or expanded/visible).

What annoys me is that I use Totem for both multiple files and single files. When I play a single file I have no need of a playlist, when I play a list of files, I often want the sidebar there.

I think that the best solution to this problem is to remember two settings for the sidebar instead of just the one. Whether the sidebar is displayed when playing a single file should be determined by whether the user had the sidebar open when they last listened to a single file. Whether the sidebar is displayed when listening to multiple files should be determined by whether the user had the sidebar open when they last listened to multiple files.

The default, in my opinion, should be collapsed for a single file and expanded for multiple files."

Bastien, any chance of this issue being fixed (properly) before 2.22?

No, I already said I don't like the idea, but I said I'd accept a patch. There are more important things to fix I'm afraid.

Bastien, I would consider this to be a feature request rather than something that needs 'fixing'. You haven't explained why you find it annoying. To me, this is obvious behaviour.

Sebastien, I disagree that there needs to be 2 settings. One setting that over-rides this behaviour and simply remembers the last state, should suffice. I do agree what the default should be.

The sidebar is visible on the first startup. So users know it's there. If they close the sidebar, they can figure out how to show it again. I don't see the point in always showing it when the sidebar was forcefully closed in the past.

Won't be required with the new UI:
