Description Julio Merino 2006-04-02 18:55:37 UTC
The gnome-mime-data package provides the mime database information used in pre-2.8 GNOME versions. Or at least it seems so because it installs its files in the now-deprecated share/application-registry and share/mime-info directories.

However, gnome-vfs still depends on this package, adding an extra dependency to the build process. The dependency should be removed.

(For what is worth, I'm using GNOME 2.14 without gnome-mime-data and it works fine so far.)

Some of the deprecated (but still supported) APIs need this data. Most apps don't need it, but its required for backwards compat.
