GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 335374
Header/Footer improvements
Last modified: 2006-09-01 22:05:51 UTC
On header: - Remove the dotted line above the main menu items. It would make the header cleaner. On footer: - Center align the menu items ("GUADEC 2006", "Schedule", "Forum", etc.) - Change the mouse over (a:hover) style: the yellow font color is not compliant with the layout. Maybe just underline the item on mouse over?

Created attachment 62201 [details] GNOME logo on left side of header I think the GNOME logo would be better on the header left-most corner. Here's a mockup.
Also, the logo could be a litle bit larger.
Yes, looks good. My original concern having GNOME and GUADEC aligned both to the left was the competition of headers, but tavon's design makes very clear the difference between both nav bars. Having the GNOME tab in the top left possible looks better when skipping from the GUADEC/subsite homepage the gnome.org homepage and viceversa. It also states clearer that GNOME is "on the top of the hierarchy". And yes, the GNOME logo could be a bit bigger, still fitting in the bar. I'm changing the severity of this bug from enhancement to major, not because of this but because of the current GUADEC logo: - As said in http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=335670 - the current spelling of the motto is incorrect. Typos in the header are bad. :) - But as said in http://mail.gnome.org/archives/guadec-list/2006-March/msg00029.html , instead of fixing the typos what we need to do is put "The GNOME Conference" instead. - Also a bigger GUADEC logo would be better, I think. No need of big changes, just increase the size within the current space, and possibly putting it in contact with the blue horizontal line at the bootom? Now it's floating (light), put on the surface and bigger will look much solid, I think.
Okay, 1) I will changed the header to "The GNOME Conference". 2) I will increase the size of the GNOME logo and have it align left.
Created attachment 62307 [details] "The GNOME Conference" - absmiddle align Hi John, IMO, the "The GNOME Conference" title is not good with top aligned with GUADEC logo. It's better to put it absmiddle or on the bottom. Mockups attached.
Created attachment 62308 [details] "The GNOME Conference" - bottom align
Lucas, I've changed the "The GNOME Conference" title to be bottom aloned as you suggested. I agree it looks a lot better Why do you think? Thanks for the excellent feedback.
I know this is a closed bug and I won't reopen it. I just want to insist in the fact that logo looks (a bit ridiculously) small. We have big fonts at "The GNOME Conference", big world globus, big banner... In comparison the GUADEC logo gets dwarfed, which is a pitty because it's a good one and after all the work we did before getting it... Anyway, it's a designers' decision and in any case this is nothing major nor urgent.
I don't remember anybody closing this bug :p Quim, I understand where you're coming from. I will try to adjust the size of the logo and other elements on the site to reflect the importance of the logo. I am open to all suggestions so feel free to suggest any changes at anytime. To be honest, I am not happy with the inconsistency of the whole site and it's my goal to continually work on the site and improve it all the way up to GUADEC. So once again, feel free to question my decisions and style. I'm not a designer by trade and I certainly need feedback and a lot of improvement.
Header: I think by now it's enough to make the logo bigger, making it touch the blue bar in the bottom. (or, following your idea of overlapping, maybe we could even make it overlap the blue bar, without transparency. Just an idea). Maybe having a fiont a bit smaller for "The GNOME Conference" would help as well. No need to touch anything else, I like the sizes of the globe and the banner. Footer: We can put the GNOME and GNOME Hispano logos in the same row, saving a lot of vertical space anmd probably making the footer look better. With these two changes I think this bug can be closed. However, the core issues are already solved and this is why I'm going to lower the severity/priority.
Closing this as the issues of this report has been fixed.
