GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 335315
Backup (ending with a ~) files or folders are not visible even with option on
Last modified: 2008-03-19 14:19:10 UTC
Please describe the problem: A folder with a ~ at the end of it is not visible in nautilus even when the option to show hidden and backup files is selected. Steps to reproduce: Add a ~ to end of a folder or file name. Actual results: The file or folder disappears and cannot be viewed in nautilus. Expected results: The file or folder should become visible when showing hidden files. Does this happen every time? yes. Other information:
Minor correction. Seems you have to switch to list view first then back to icon view in order for this to happen.
Seems that you may have to toggle the show hidden file option as well.
From Ubuntu bug #5326: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/5326 The original bug reported was: -------------------------------- I am not able to see files ending in tilde ('~') in normal view neither with the "Show hidden" option. The option works as expected with filenames beggining with a dot. -------------------------------- Latest comment: -------------------------------- I think that this bug is a combination of two things: #1: spatial windows remember their "do not show hidden files" and "do not show backup files" settings, and are not overridden by central preferences unless the window is set back to current defaults. (Note: Both of the above preference settings are toggled by the same item in preferences.) #2: the "Show Hidden Files" menu option only toggles the "do not show hidden files" option. With #2 fixed, the behaviour should be a bit more logical... --------------------------------

This seems to be a duplicate of #327361, or is at least strongly connected to it.
WTF?! Is this some kind of cruel joke? I'm using Gnome 2.20.1 and this still hasn't been fixed even though people have been reporting, asking for a fix, begging for a fix, and complaining about this problem FOR SEVERAL YEARS! I don't mean to be mean but in all honesty I don't think the Gnome developers are even trying any more. I realize that politeness is paramount when reporting bugs but maybe it's time for some tough love. I can't speak on the difficulty or effort required to program a fix - I'm not a Gnome programmer. What I can do is point out that *every* other desktop environment that I have seen seems to work correctly (and as expected) in this area. There is an elephant in the room and nobody is saying anything about it! Will this still be broken three years from now? Grrrrrr!
This is a dupe of 327361
