Description Ole Laursen 2006-03-05 15:42:47 UTC
I was updating the Danish translation for Gnome Volume Manager and found it very hard to find an appropriate translation for the string "Volume Manager"in g-v-m.desktop.in. Both "volume" and "manage" are very fuzzy, almost information-devoid words without a clear corresponding phrase in Danish.

I also couldn't help noticing that apparently g-v-m now also supports all sorts of other external stuff besides sticks, disks and discs. So the current name appears to be a bit misleading. I think "volume" is difficult for the average native English-speaking user to understand too. Hence, I humbly suggest changing the user-visible name and description in gnome-volume-manager.desktop.in.

What about "External Media and Devices" or simply "External Devices" and then "Preferences for removable devices and media" or something along these lines?

Beside, it's confusing: thing of gnome-volume-manager vs volume-applet.
Comment 2 tobias 2007-02-18 19:08:43 UTC
There is the same problem in German, even the English name isn't very good. I would suggest some think like "Media and Hotplug Devices" or just "Plug and Play"
Comment 3 Bastien Nocera 2007-08-20 12:36:57 UTC
I keep getting people on the RH bugzilla telling me about "gnome-volume-manager" when they mean "gnome-volume-control". Furthermore, gnome-volume-manager handles more than disk volumes nowadays.

gnome-hardware-hotplug-manager?
Comment 4 Luca Cavalli 2007-08-20 12:46:46 UTC
What about a shorter "gnome-hotplug-manager"?
Comment 5 tobias 2007-08-20 15:05:55 UTC
Yes, "gnome-hotplug-manager" sound good.
Comment 6 Luis Medinas 2007-09-10 21:15:21 UTC
One more vote to "gnome-hotplug-manager".
Comment 7 Jeffrey Stedfast 2007-09-11 19:01:42 UTC
I think gnome-hotplug might be a better name than gnome-hotplug-manager, at least for the package itself.
Comment 8 Luca Cavalli 2007-09-13 08:10:24 UTC
Jeffrey, I agree. gnome-hotplug for the package, gnome-hotplug-manager for the daemon and gnome-hotplug-properties (or -preferences?) for the capplet.
Comment 9 André Klapper 2012-03-05 23:24:24 UTC
According to its maintainers, "g-v-m hasn't seen a change in three years, it definitely qualifies as unmaintained."

It is highly unlikely that there will be any further active development
(especially as functionality has been superseded by other modules).
