GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 333344
Users cannot see why he cannot "share" music
Last modified: 2018-05-24 11:28:09 UTC
Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña reported in Debian bug http://bugs.debian.org/355238 that it gets warning when avahi is not installed or not running and he starts RB or shares music, but only in .xsession-errors. On Sat, Mar 04, 2006, Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña wrote: > The application should, when that option is enabled, show a popup window > stating that it cannot do music sharing and (in Debian) state that you need > to have 'avahi-daemon' installed in order for that feature to work. I believe the widgets should be disabled instead. (This bug is about the GUI changes in case avahi isn't there, but is related to bug#318816 where RB crashes when avahi disappears.)
*** Bug 386747 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
From bug #386747: > https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/62882 "User installs rhythmbox, goes to the properties, and selects that they want their music to be shared. Then, they look on their friends machine, hoping to see their share come up, it never does. User gets frustrated and thinks it just doesn't work. Reasearch has to be done for the user to figure out that they actually need to install avahi. This is confusing because it seems like it should just work from enabling in rhythmbox. Perhaps a hook could be put into rhythmbox so that the user is prompted to install avahi dependies when sharing is selected."
