Description Dana Olson 2006-03-03 17:39:43 UTC
Please describe the problem:
Gnome-screensaver doesn't appear to notice when I'm playing a game, such as
Frozen Bubble, nor if I'm watching a movie in Xine, and instead it activates anyhow.

This is an annoyance for Xine, and a problem for anyone who plays Frozen Bubble,
as they can't exit from the screensaver without losing their progress.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Run Frozen Bubble or put on a movie in Xine.
2. After 10 minutes or whatever your setting, the screensaver comes on.
3. Profit?

Actual results:
The screensaver comes on, ignoring my movie playing or keypresses in the game.

Expected results:
No screensaver should come on.

Does this happen every time?
Yes.

The best way is for these games and movie players to inhibit the screensaver directly. There is some information about this in the FAQ:

I think this is a bug about the lack of a compatible "xscreensaver-command --poke" which is something we'll hopefully fix with a glue package in Ubuntu (eg. as it's not possible to update commerical/binary games and the like that are already out there in the wild).

Dana: you also said on one of the Ubuntu lists that you'd filed a bug about gnome-screensaver fading randomly in the middle of typing (believed to be related to suspend)--- ( https://launchpad.net/bugs/33523 ).
