If nautilus schemas are not installed on the system, gsearchtool will crash : one retrieval of nautilus gconf settings doesn't handle NULL response well.

Patch attached (for 2.12.x branch, should apply to HEAD as well).

fixed in HEAD and gnome-2-14. no more 2.12 releases are planned, though.
