Description Sebastien Bacher 2006-02-17 22:35:45 UTC
That bug has been described on https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/31799

"I really like the automatic contacts feature but if I move to a different box or reinstall I lose all of them. It would be really nice if I could tell evolution to scan the email on my server and harvest addresses and S/MIME certs out of those emails for me."
Comment 1 Karsten Bräckelmann 2006-02-17 23:43:44 UTC
Reinstalling does not lose any data. Starting with a fresh $HOME does.

Anyway, what about simply saving the Address Book as vCard file? You can import them on any machine.
Comment 2 Sebastien Bacher 2006-02-18 17:45:12 UTC
Distro bug comments about that:

"Not really, the problem is also that if I write an email on one machine I get an entry in that machine's address book, but if I go to another machine I have the email, but not the contact.

A more concrete use case: I tried to email my brother from a computer I don't use often. I needed to encrypt it (had a config file in it) but in order to do so I had to go search for an email from him to put the cert in the cache. It would be much nicer to be able to tell evolution to go out and harvest certs and emails from all my folders.
...
> what prevents you to export a .vcf from the first computer to use it on the second?

Synchronization.

Shall I go back and forth exporting and importing everywhere as I go along? Of course, I could use LDAP or something, but the average joe can't.

Please understand that this is a feature request and not a bug report. I just got annoyed that on some computers I had lots of addresses to auto-complete and on others I didn't even though all the data is right there on my server. It seems like evolution could automatically add any address it sees in the headers or something like that."

Bumping version to a stable release.
Comment 4 André Klapper 2012-06-26 18:13:58 UTC
Corner case, proposing WONTFIX.
Comment 5 André Klapper 2021-05-19 11:31:20 UTC
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/Community/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new enhancement request ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
